When did English appear?

Over 400 million people consider English their mother tongue. Chinese is the native language of over 650 million. Nevertheless, English is considered the most important means of linguistic communication of people around the world. This happened because in politics, in business relations, English is the main language today. In many countries, it is the second state language.

English appeared about 5 centuries ago. Like most European languages, it basically belongs to the Indo-European language group. Five thousand years ago, it may have been the language of communication among the peoples who inhabited the south of modern Russia, or the nomadic tribes who lived between the Rhine and the Aral Sea. However, before history recorded it, the peoples who spoke this ancient language were scattered around the world, and it itself broke up into various dialects. One of these dialects, known as Old Germanic or Teutonic, began to divide into other dialects at the beginning of our era. Two main ones were formed: East German and West German. The latter, in turn, was divided into two more: High German and Low German dialects.

From High German came the modern German language.

From Low German came Danish and English.

It should be noted that the process of development of the English language from the Low German dialect was long in time and complex in changes. The first stage of the transition can be called the Old English or Anglo-Saxon dialect. During the period of the Anglo-Saxon conquest (about 449), it merged with the language of the Britons. Of course, this fusion of the language of the conquerors with the language of the local peoples gave rise to a new language, which until 1150 was called Old English. From 1150 to 1500 it was called Middle English, and after 1500 the language we now know as Modern English developed.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The breathalyzer built into the car will block the engine 14.04.2012

Cars with built-in breathalyzers that prevent the engine from starting if the driver is intoxicated may hit the market a little earlier than previously thought. According to the WSJ, the production of such systems with a “breathing tube” and a finger sensor has already started, work is being carried out in cooperation with the Association of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, USA).

AAM vice president of transportation safety, Rob Strassburger, said manufacturers "have made more progress faster than we expected." However, in reality, even those who are aware of the importance of such a system for the safety of the driver and passengers are unlikely to agree to have a personal sentry in their own car.

The appearance of such a system does not mean that now it will be forcibly installed on all cars, the decision to install it is made on an individual basis either by the owner of the car or by the manufacturer. For example, breathalyzers may appear on rental cars. Some experts still doubt the reliability of such systems and point to the likelihood of false positives. In addition, you still need to determine the level of concentration of alcohol in the blood, which no longer allows you to start the car.
