Frame solar modules

There are many options and industrial developments of photocells and methods for their manufacture. Let us briefly describe the design of one of them - a standard monocrystalline silicon solar cell. The general view of the solar cell is shown in Figure 2.1.

The frame solar module is made in the form of a panel enclosed in a frame made of aluminum profile. The panel is a photovoltaic generator consisting of a glass plate, on the back side of which solar cells are placed between two layers of sealing (laminating) film, electrically connected to each other by metal busbars. The bottom layer of the sealing film is protected from external influences by a layer of protective film. A diode block is attached to the inside of the module housing, under the cover of which there are electrical contacts intended for connecting the module.

Basic technical requirements

1. The starting material must be chemically highly pure with stable properties.

2. Photocells must be produced in large quantities at minimal cost. It is necessary to ensure general control over the manufacturing process and a high level of accuracy.

3. Solar cells must have a service life of at least 20 years in exposed (often harmful) environments. It should be taken into account that even without the concentration of solar radiation, the operating temperature of the photocell can vary in the range from -30 to +200°C. Electrical contacts must be stable and protected from all types of corrosion. The device must be waterproof.

4. The design must be such that the destruction of one of the elements should not lead to failure of the entire system. For this purpose, parallel and serial connections are used, which, in the event of failure of any elements, should exclude the possibility of failure of other elements.

5. Prefabricated modules must be suitable for transportation even to hard-to-reach and remote areas.

Types of photocells

The most common industrially produced solar cells are flat wafer silicon cells. There are also a variety of alternative types and designs that are being developed to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of energy produced by reducing the overall cost of solar cells. Table 2.1 briefly summarizes the various solar cells.

Notes 1. Under AM 1 irradiation conditions, the optimal band gap is from 1,4 to 1,5 eV. 2. As the temperature increases, the band gap decreases. The table shows data for ambient temperature.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Chlorpyrifos raises risk of obesity 07.09.2021

A widely used pesticide may be partly responsible for the global obesity epidemic, according to a study by scientists at McMaster University.

The researchers found that chlorpyrifos, which is banned for use in foods in Canada but widely used to process fruits and vegetables in many other parts of the world, slows down the burning of calories in the brown adipose tissue of mice. This process, known as diet-induced thermogenesis, causes the body to store excess calories, contributing to obesity.

The scientists made the discovery after studying 34 commonly used pesticides and herbicides in brown fat cells and testing the effects of chlorpyrifos in mice fed high-calorie diets. Their findings could have important public health implications.

"Brown fat is the metabolic furnace in our body that burns calories, unlike regular fat which is used to store them. This generates heat and prevents calories from being stored in our body as regular white fat. We know that brown fat is activated during during colds and during meals," said senior author Gregory Steinberg, professor of medicine and co-director of the Center for Research on Metabolism, Obesity, and Diabetes at McMaster. "Lifestyle changes associated with diet and exercise rarely lead to sustained weight loss. We think that part of the problem may be that chlorpyrifos turns off the metabolic furnace."

Chlorpyrifos would need to limit brown fat energy intake to 40 calories each day to induce obesity in adults, resulting in five pounds of weight gain per year. Although some environmental toxins, including chlorpyrifos, have been linked to rising levels of obesity in both humans and animals, most studies attribute weight gain to overeating rather than problems with calorie burning.
