A scientific study has shown that tiny zooplankton are able to digest microscopic fibers of plastic (less than five millimeters in size) before releasing them back into the environment in an even smaller form.

Study author Amanda Dawson discovered the phenomenon while working on a project with microbeads - a polyethylene plastic often used in beauty products such as facial scrubs - to test their toxic effects in a special krill aquarium.
