Potato forks. Tips for the home master

Potatoes are often called the second bread. And if bread is not sown or reaped in home gardens or summer cottages, then almost everyone plants potatoes.

This root crop is harvested, usually digging with a bayonet shovel, which is not so difficult on light and dry soils. But heavy or moist soil sticks to the shovel, making it difficult to work. Therefore, this operation is often carried out using a pitchfork. However, ordinary forks are not suitable for such work - their teeth are bent and it is inconvenient to press them with your foot, and their strength is low. So I made special ones.

Externally, the proposed pitchfork differs little from the standard ones. All their specificity is in the execution of parts, the nomenclature of which is the same as that of industrial designs.

The fork teeth are made of a steel round rod with a diameter of 10 mm. Approximately in the middle they are curved, and their lower ends are sharpened. The number of teeth has been increased to seven (there are three or four in the factory ones) and they are evenly distributed on the traverse so that even small potatoes do not slip between them.

The traverse is made of a steel water pipe with an outer diameter of 25 mm and a wall thickness of 2,5 mm. Corresponding diametrical holes are drilled under the teeth in the traverse, countersunk from the outside on one side. Here, after being inserted into the traverse, the teeth are welded in a circle, and the seam is turned flush with the pipe. On the same side, a tulle is welded to the middle of the traverse above the central tooth - a conical branch pipe for the handle.

The tuleyka, like the traverse, is made of a thick-walled water pipe, only with a larger diameter - 45 mm. To give it a conical shape, a longitudinal trapezoidal groove is cut in its wall. The edges of the groove are beveled outward (turned with a "grinder") at an angle of 45 °, the pipe walls are crimped, and the joint is welded. At the lower end, a radius is made along the wall of the traverse pipe, and near the upper (thicker) end, on both sides of the weld, there are two radial (non-through) countersinking holes for the screws for fixing the handle. The seam itself is located on the back (rear) side of the fork (see photo on the splash screen). But it can also be on their outer side, as shown in the drawing.

Forks for digging potatoes (click to enlarge): 1 - tooth (steel, circle 1, 7 pcs.); 2 - traverse (pipe 25x2,5); 3 - tuleyka (pipe 45x2,5); 4 - cutting (birch, rod Ø 40); 5 - latch (screw Ø 4, 2 pcs.); 6 - plug (steel sheet s2, 2 pcs.)

The material of the handle is wood. Mine is made from birch. But for sure, in every region and even district there is a more beloved, and most importantly, some other breed that has been tested by time and in work. It is important to choose a tree that is even and suitable in diameter, so that it does not need to be planed or turned, but only removed from the bark - after all, the outer layer is the most durable and resilient.

One end (upper) of the handle is rounded - turned into a hemisphere, and the other (lower) is planed at the end so that it fits snugly into the body at least half of its length.

The mass of my potato special forks, of course, is larger than that of ordinary industrial ones, but this is more of a plus than a minus, since during operation the forks serve as a kind of lever and rest on the ground. Rearranging them from tuber to tuber does not require much muscle energy compared to the digging process.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Children gain weight in elementary school 08.09.2016

Employees of the Cancer Research Center in the UK conducted a study of the health of younger schoolchildren. They found that after the first grade, many of the children put on a lot of weight. This is worrisome, as obesity leads to many diseases. Scientists urge the UK government to pay attention to the circumstances and take serious measures to preserve the health of schoolchildren.

According to scientists, the weight of schoolchildren is growing every year. Many children do not fit clothes sewn on the average figure of a younger student. This indicates a negative trend. First of all, uncontrolled weight gain leads to cancer. More than 18 British people suffer from cancer every year because of obesity. Also, a lot of weight leads to some genetic diseases. In the end, the general level of health worsens, which is transmitted to descendants.

The researchers suggest that the state take responsibility for schoolchildren. First of all, in the lower grades, it is necessary to increase physical education classes, as well as change the nutrition system. Food should be low in calories. This will help students not to go beyond the average normal weight.
