Cotoneaster brilliant (cotoneaster holly)

The scientific name of the genus Cotoneaster comes from the Greek cotonea - quince, aster - having the appearance, by the similarity of quince leaves and one of the cotoneaster species. The name of this plant should not be confused with plants of the genus Cornus (Cornus) from the Cornaceae family.

Upright deciduous shrub up to 3 m tall, with densely pubescent young shoots of the current year. The crown is 1,5 times larger in diameter than the height, formed by straight shoots growing in all directions. Average annual growth.

The leaves are simple, alternate, entire, elliptical to ovate, pointed, 1,7-5 cm long, 0,8-3,5 cm wide, dark green above, shiny, glabrous; below, first pubescent, yellowish-tomentose, later almost glabrous, yellowish. With the onset of autumn, the color of the leaves becomes dark brownish-reddish.

Small pinkish flowers during flowering are located in abundance over the entire surface of the shoots, and because of them the leaves are almost invisible. Sepals broadly triangular, 2,5-3 times shorter than petals. Stamens twenty, columns three, up to four. Inflorescences loose, corymbose racemes, 5-12-flowered. Flowering begins in May-June and lasts for a month.

The fruits are black, shiny, spherical in shape, with brown-red flesh, 7-9 mm in diameter, with three, rarely two seeds. Fruit type - apple. The fruits ripen in late September - early October, and remain on the plants until frost. The first fruiting is in the fourth year.

It is found in China (Gansu Province) and Altai (Republic of Buryatia and Irkutsk Region).

It grows on rocky slopes, on gravel rivers, in thickets of shrubs and larch-mixed forests.

The plant contains anthocyanins, flavonoids. The leaves contain phenolcarboxylic acids, also glycosides, vitamin C. The seeds contain hydrocyanic acid, and the fruits contain coumarins.

The fruits of this type of cotoneaster are inedible.

According to some reports, the plant is moderately poisonous.

The brilliant cotoneaster is decorative, tolerates a haircut and is quite unpretentious, so it is used to organize hedges and borders. In landscaping and landscape design, they are used to create dense hedges (free-form and sheared), plantings in groups and one at a time.

Cotoneasters are used to fix sandy slopes, as well as hedges. Cotoneaster has been known in the collections of botanical gardens since 1864. Currently, about 80 species, varieties and garden forms of cotoneaster are used as material for landscape design. All of them are undemanding to soils and humidity, most of them are frost-resistant and gas-resistant. Good for molding. Old bushes are easily rejuvenated by radical pruning. Deciduous species are pruned in February, evergreen - in April.

Cotoneaster is propagated by seeds and vegetatively. Green cuttings root faster at high humidity, that is, under the film. The best time for cuttings is the second half of July. The substrate consists of a mixture of peat and sand, taken in equal quantities.

Among the main pests, apple aphids, plum sawflies and cotoneaster mites should be noted. To combat them, various insecticides are used.

Cotoneaster brilliant can suffer from fusarium. Measures to combat this disease are disinfection of the soil around the bushes, pruning and destruction of diseased shoots.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Virtual reality cures fear of heights 17.07.2018

Fear of heights is one of the most common phobias in the world. And now a group of European researchers have found a new way to treat it that doesn't require going to the doctor or going up to the roof.

The researchers used 100 volunteers for the experiments, all of whom were previously diagnosed with a fear of heights, but they did not receive any treatment for their problem. The researchers then divided the volunteers into two groups. 51 volunteers were sent to the control group, while 49 people were given the opportunity to undergo a two-week virtual reality treatment (47 people agreed to the offer and 44 completed it). The scientists published the results of the study in The Lancet Psychiatry.

During the program, volunteers used a virtual reality helmet along with a "virtual trainer" for six sessions, each lasting approximately 30 minutes. The automated trainer asked them questions about their fear of heights and told them facts about their phobia. He then took the subjects through a series of virtual scenarios to help people address their fear. In the scenarios, people were in different situations: for example, they could throw a ball over a roof parapet or save a cat from a tree. At the end of each session, the trainer asked people how they were feeling and encouraged them to face their fear in the real world between sessions.

All participants filled out questionnaires about how intense their fear of heights was before the test, two weeks later (that is, shortly before the end of the virtual sessions), and two weeks after the experiment. By the end of the trial, 34 of the 49 volunteers said their fear was much less. In all participants in the control group, the level of fear remained unchanged.

This and other examples show that VR can help people with mental health problems. However, this is only the first trial to show that virtual reality treatment can produce the desired results without the help of a trained (and potentially expensive) therapist. According to the study's lead author, Daniel Freeman, the new technology could increase the number of people who receive the psychological help they need, not only for fear of heights, but also for other disorders. At least, the researchers themselves do not intend to dwell on acrophobia alone.
