Chamenerium narrow-leaved (willow-herb), Epilobium angustifolium. Botanical description of the plant, areas of growth and ecology, economic importance, applications

Chamenerium angustifolia (Ivan-tea)

Chamenerium angustifolia (willow-herb) is a very popular plant, best known for the fact that a kind of tea drink is prepared from its leaves. However, Ivan-tea rhizomes also have nutritional qualities, although they contain significant amounts of tannins.

Harvest rhizomes in autumn after yellowing and drying of above-ground shoots. The collected rhizomes are washed, dried a little, peeled, cut into small pieces and soaked several times in water to remove tannins. Then dried and crushed in mortars. Flour from the rhizomes of Ivan tea is added to grain flour when baking bread, shortbread, homemade cookies, enhancing their sweet taste.

Chamenerium angustifolia, or willow-tea, is not only a honey plant and a salad plant. It gives a drink that is in no way inferior to tea in its qualities. Due to its high taste, it has long been used by people. The grass contains about 5% proteins, 3,5% carbohydrates. Only young leaves, shoots and buds, roots are used for food. Young sweet roots in the Caucasus serve as vegetables for first courses. They are also fried in oil with breadcrumbs, eaten like asparagus or cauliflower.

Boiled willow-tea leaves are tart in taste. When preparing salads and soups, the addition of greens from other plants is necessary. The leaves contain 190 mg% of vitamin C, various tannins, and aromatic compounds. Therefore, the leaves have long been known as a raw material for the preparation of a tea drink. There were even proposals to establish industrial processing of willow-tea leaves.

In the northern regions, there is an established technology for preparing willow-herb leaves for future use. The collected young leaves are somewhat crushed, dried for some time in the air without access to sunlight. Dried leaves are ground to roll into tubes like real tea, and then tightly packed in wooden boxes with lids for further fermentation. After fermentation, the leaves are dried a little and packed in wooden utensils.

The drink is brewed in the same way as natural tea. On expeditions and hikes, freshly picked leaves can also be brewed.

Chamenirium angustifolia, also known as willowherb, is a perennial herb that is grown in temperate climates around the world.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing Ivan tea:

Cultivation:

  • Choose a planting site with plenty of sunlight and moist soil.
  • Prepare the soil by adding organic compost and sand if the soil is too clay or heavy.
  • Plant seeds or seedlings of willowherb at a depth of about 1-2 cm and with an interval of 30-45 cm between them.
  • Water the plants regularly to keep the soil moist at all times.
  • Fertilize plants sparingly using organic fertilizers.

Workpiece:

  • Harvest willowherb leaves and stems when they are fully grown but not yet in bloom.
  • Dry the leaves and stems in a dry, ventilated place for 3-4 days.
  • Spread the leaves and stems on a clean surface and crush them into small pieces.
  • Store fireweed in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry place.

Storage:

  • Store Ivan tea in a dry and cool place at a temperature of 15 to 20 ° C.
  • Provide adequate ventilation to prevent mold growth.
  • Do not allow too high or low humidity to avoid rotting of plant material.
  • Periodically check willowherb for mold or rot and remove damaged plant parts.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Optimal combination of crops and solar panels 04.10.2023

Researchers from Wageningen University in the Netherlands have concluded that co-locating farmland and solar panels is a viable approach.

According to experts, the combination of crops and solar panels on an area of 1,25 hectares can lead to yields and electricity production equal to the results of two separate fields of 1 hectare each.

Large-scale cultivation of plants and electricity production in the same area appears to be quite feasible, despite some reduction in crop yields and electricity production per hectare compared to a situation where the land is used for only one function. However, the overall productivity per hectare using agrophotovoltaics is superior to that of growing crops and producing electricity in two separate fields.

Research conducted in Germany on several crops confirmed that achieving crop production and solar energy on an area of 1 hectare each (2 hectares in total) is only possible on 1,25 hectares using an agricultural photovoltaic system.

To maximize yield and energy production, solar panels must be tailored to the crops being grown, and sometimes changes in agricultural production methods are required.
