Photon camera tracks endoscope in human body 10.09.2017

Proper tracking of the probe during various medical tests and diagnostics often depends on the skill of the doctor performing the procedure or requires expensive imaging techniques. A team of scientists from the University of Edinburgh has developed a photonic camera that can detect traces of light from an endoscope tip through 20 centimeters of tissue.

Most photons scatter by reflecting off tissues. But scientists have found that two kinds of photons pass through the tissues of the body with a low level of scattering. They can be isolated using special sensitive single-photon detectors. By focusing on these photons and ignoring others, the researchers created a prototype camera that can identify a medical device to within 1 centimeter.

The camera was first successfully tested by detecting an endoscope inside the lungs of sheep, after which the researchers began testing the new technology on humans. It took the camera 17 seconds to create an accurate exposure for the image.

The developers are confident that in the future they will be able to reduce the time required to create an exposure, as well as improve the accuracy of the location of the endoscope, and in the future the camera will be able to visualize the location of a medical device in real time. But even with the current delay time and low accuracy, the device is already suitable for various types of endoscopic examinations of lung segments.
