When was it fashionable in zoos to show blacks along with animals?

In the second half of the 19th century, the rapid development of zoos began in Europe and North America. In addition to animals, zoo owners willingly placed people in enclosures - usually in the form of entire villages of "primitive" blacks, Eskimos, and Indians. Often, individual Negroes were placed in a pavilion with monkeys, presenting them as a transitional link from animals to a civilized white man. As the 20th century progressed, such exhibitions became less and less, but even in 1958, a Congolese village was presented at the World Exhibition in Brussels. Ethnic settlements in zoos can be seen in our time, for example, in 2005 in London, but now people settle in them on a regular labor or voluntary basis.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Modular Robots ElectroVoxel 28.02.2022

A group of scientists from the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Calgary have created a system of modular robots that can take on various forms. ElectroVoxel robots don't have motors or moving parts, they just use electromagnets to move around each other.

Each edge of these cube-shaped robots is an electromagnetic ferrite core wrapped in copper wire. Each side of the ElectroVoxel is about 60 millimeters long, and the total cost to build the robot is only 60 cents.

The shape of the robot changes when there is a change in the polarity of the magnet. Circuit boards and electronics inside each hub control the direction of current from each electromagnet.

To control the robots, a software scheduler is used to plan reconfigurations. The developers say that certain magnets can be isolated to control the speed of the cube and ensure that they do not collide with each other. Thousands of robots can be controlled at the same time and made to take any shape the user wants.

These robots can be used to modify and create structures in outer space, as well as to change the inertial properties of the spacecraft, which will help reduce the need for additional fuel for reconfiguration.

Robots can be used in space to build or replace structures, as well as to assist astronauts.
