Dogwood white

The name of this plant should not be confused with plants of the Cotoneaster genus from the Rosaceae family.

The specific epithet was given to this species not for the color of the shoots (they are red, in contrast to the blood-red dogwood - Cornus sanguinea, in which the shoots are green), but for the color of the fruits - they are white.

A strongly branched deciduous shrub up to 3 m tall with straight flexible bare branches of bright red color (especially bright in spring), arcuately curved in old age. Lateral buds petiolate, covered with two leaf-like scales up to 7 mm long.

Strongly branched deciduous entomophilous shrub up to 3 m tall.

Branches glabrous, thin, flexible, straight, arcuately curved in old age. The color of the bark is coral-red, rarely red-brown or black-red. The brightest bark in young shoots. Young shoots are usually with a bluish bloom.

The leaves are opposite, 2-10 cm long and 1-7 cm wide, on petioles about 1 cm long, with three to five prominent arcuate veins. The leaf blade is elliptical or broadly elliptical in shape, entire, covered on both sides with short adpressed (sometimes slightly spaced) pubescence, dark green above, glaucous below. There are cultural forms with variability (deviation from the norm).

The flowers are collected in thick corymbs 3-5 cm in diameter at the ends of the branches. Pedicels covered with dense appressed grayish and few long reddish pubescence. Calyx with sharp short (0,1-0,3 mm long) wide triangular teeth. Corolla with four white petals, broadly lanceolate, 4-5 mm long.

The fruits are berry-like drupes, unripe - bluish, when ripe - bluish-white, flattened. The stone is obliquely elliptical, thinning towards the ends.

Derain white refers to fast-growing, gas-resistant shrubs. Pretty shade-tolerant, but grows well in full light.

Pork fruits are juicy berry-like false drupes, unripe - bluish, when ripe - bluish-white, flattened. The stone is obliquely elliptical, thinning towards the ends.

Dogwood white

The natural range of white svidina is very wide - from the northwest (Dvino-Pechora region) and the center (Ladoga-Ilmensky, Upper Volga, Volga-Kama regions) of the European part of Russia in the west to the Far East and Japan, northern Mongolia and China, Korea, Japanese islands.

It grows in forests that occupy mainly floodplains and river valleys with moderate soil moisture. In mountainous regions, along the valleys of rivers and streams, it rises to a height of 1000 m and above (Altai, Sayan, Tuva). Svidina white is widely cultivated in gardens and parks, in urban landscaping. Often runs wild, tk. seeds are easily dispersed by birds, and can be found along the outskirts of settlements, in forests and on the edges of the entire distribution area.

The bark contains tannins. Solid wood is suitable for small crafts, and rods for wickerwork. The fruits are eaten by bears, merganser ducks. The seeds are rich in highly flammable greenish oil.

Honey plant. Visited by honey bees to collect nectar and pollen. The productivity of sugar in 100 flowers in the Khabarovsk Territory is 40 mg. With continuous growth, the productivity of honey is 50-65 kg/ha.

An ornamental shrub cultivated in gardens and parks, in urban landscaping. The plant was introduced into cultivation in 1741. Often runs wild, seeds are easily dispersed by birds.

They are planted near roads, as well as to secure the shores of various reservoirs and in shelterbelts. Used to create hedges.

The plant is inedible for humans, but its fruits are actively eaten and distributed by birds (endozoochory).

Svidina white is a widespread ornamental shrub. The most commonly cultivated form with a yellowish-white border on the leaves is known as Cornus alba var. argenteomarginata Rehder, 1940.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

artificial ear 12.01.2006

American engineers have created an artificial hearing device.

Every mammal has a cochlea in its middle ear, a cunningly curved organ filled with fluid and equipped with nerve endings. It recognizes the vibrations of the ossicles of the front ear and prepares an electrical signal that goes to the brain.

The artificial snail was created by Karl Grosz of the University of Michigan and his student Robert White with the support of the National Science Foundation (USA). Its main advantage is that all parts can be made using the same methods that microchips are grown, that is, mass production methods, which means that their cost will not be high at all.

So, a microelectromechanical snail consists of a piece of hard glass in which a channel is etched. Silicone oil is poured into this channel, and a cone-shaped silicon nitride membrane is located on top. Its narrow part catches high-frequency vibrations, and its wide part catches low-frequency vibrations. Another nitride membrane replaces the stirrup, a special bone in the mammalian ear.

As tests have shown, the device is able to recognize signals in the range of 4-2 kHz, which is a significant part of the range of our ear - from 35 Hz to 20 kHz.
