Earthworms can replace synthetic fertilizers 01.03.2022

Researchers at University College Dublin have uncovered new information about the importance of soil dwellers to nutrient-consuming plants.

The findings suggest a previously undiscovered shortening of the soil nitrogen cycle, in which earthworms, when active, quickly enrich the soil and plants with nitrogen released by their mucus.

The role of soil animals such as earthworms in nutrient cycling has traditionally been considered beneficial but indirect, slow and cumulative.

In the lab and in the field, a team of researchers from Ireland, Germany and China were able to track nutrient transfer from earthworms to soil, wheat germ and aphids using a technique called stable isotope tracers.

They found that earthworm-derived nitrogen was absorbed by green flies after two hours in the lab and 24 hours in the field. The researchers were amazed at how quickly the worms' nitrogen traveled through the soil to roots, plants, and sap-eating insects.

The agricultural sector must maximize the financial benefits of this earthworm-supplied nitrogen as a potential alternative to synthetic fertilizers, which are very costly as global supply chains continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and rising energy prices.
