Chauvinism

Nicolas Toussaint Charlet
Nicolas Toussaint Charlet

Phraseologism: Chauvinism.

Meaning: Aggressive ultranationalism.

Origin: The primary source was popular prints ("pictures from Epinal") on military topics, the author of which was the French artist Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet. The constant hero of these pictures is the good soldier Chauvin. Later, the same lubok hero became the main character in the comedy "Three-Colored Cockade" (authors - the Cognard brothers). The play was staged in March 1831. The comedy was a success, which contributed to the popularity of the image of the militant recruit Chauvin, who gave birth to a new concept - chauvinism.

Random phraseology:

Die is cast.

Meaning:

The end of hesitation, indecision (about making a final decision) (book).

Origin:

These words (lat. Alea jacta est) were spoken by Julius Caesar before crossing the Rubicon River, which separated ancient Italy from Gaul, in 49 BC. e. According to the ancient Greek historian Plutarch ("Comparative Lives"), Caesar pronounced these words in Greek (which was a sign of good taste among the Romans), as a quotation from the comedy of the famous ancient Greek playwright Menander (c. 343-291 BC): " Let the die be cast." This decision marked the beginning of the civil war in Rome. Hence the expression "to cross the Rubicon" - to make an irrevocable decision, to take a decisive step.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. The formula for the happiest songs has been discovered 21.02.2023

The researchers found that these tracks have the usual structure, but spiced up with unpredictable elements.

Music is what makes us feel better when we are down. Scientists have long found out that funny songs can bring a smile back to our face even on the most cloudy day.

However, what makes these songs so fun? University of Sheffield music psychologist Dr Michael Bonshor has discovered the formula for the happiest songs in the world and believes that The Beach Boys' Good Vibrations is the best fit.

A music psychologist has found that inspirational tracks have a certain tempo and a regular structure - as a rule, their tempo is 137 beats per minute (bpm), and the structure is very trivial: verse-chorus. However, these tracks also have their own "zest" - for the most part they are seasoned with unpredictable elements. For example, a key configuration or an additional note. According to Bonchor, we probably like the seventh chords because they give the tracks some interest.

Regular chords are made up of three notes, while seventh chords use an extra note, which gives a sense of musical tension and relief. The music psychologist notes that the second place in the ranking of the happiest songs is occupied by James Brown's I Got You (I Feel Good), and the third is the song House of Fun by Madness.

Note that this study is commercial, Dr. Bonchor received an order to conduct this study, but this did not affect the results of the study. During his research, he also found that tracks are generally perceived as more joyful when they are played in a major key. Also, they tend to have a strong 1-2-1-2 rhythm, so we like to dance to them.

Funny songs in most cases start with a bang, and therefore they do not have a long build-up. People like the high volume of upbeat songs with bright and upbeat notes played on instruments like trumpets and electric guitars rather than softer instruments. However, the icing on the cake of fun songs is still a repetitive rhythm or guitar riff that can hurt people and literally "get stuck in the head."
