Elder herbaceous (herbal elderberry, smelly elderberry, dwarf elderberry, elderberry dwarf, elderberry barren, elderberry), Sambucus ebulus. Botanical description of the plant, area, methods of application, cultivation

Elder herbaceous

It is believed that the Latin name of the genus Sambucus is associated with sambuca, an oriental musical instrument (genus of harp), made from elder wood, and reflects the similarity of the plant's branches with the strings of this musical instrument. It is possible that the name sambucus is associated with the red color of the elder fruit and comes from sambyx - red dye.

The specific name of the species is the Latin noun ebulum used as an adjective, which was used to name this plant - elderberry.

A perennial herbaceous plant 50-150 cm high with an unpleasant odor (not to be confused with a woody plant black elder - Sambucus nigra). Stem green, erect, thick, solitary. The leaves are compound, opposite, with a petiole 4-5 times shorter than the blade, pinnate, up to 20 cm long. They consist of 9-11 pointed leaflets with serrated edges. The lower lateral leaflets have petioles, the upper leaflets are sessile. The root is white, powerful, thick, long, creeping.

The flowers are white, pink or reddish, collected three together in a flat apical paniculate inflorescence on a long peduncle. They have an almond scent. Flowering from May to July.

The fruits are black drupes, shiny, spherical in shape, about 4 mm long, with three or four ovoid seeds. Taste good, but poisonous. Fruiting time - from August to September.

It occurs in the strip of European broad-leaved forests, as well as in forest-steppes and mountains (up to the middle zone) - in Ukraine, Belarus, the Caucasus, in the southern part of the European part of Russia, in Central Asia (in the Kopetdag mountains), in southern Europe.

Elder herbaceous

It lives in weedy places, in gardens, on the edges, along the banks of rivers, in wastelands, along roads, in vegetable gardens, in ravines.

Tannins, essential oil, organic acids (malic, tartaric, valeric), as well as bitterness, sambucyanin, pectins, amygdalin alkaloid were found in the fruits. Since amygdalin is toxic, the whole plant is poisonous. So, when using berries, flowers and leaves, poisoning of the body may occur. Elderberry roots contain bitterness, tannins and saponins.

Root, leaves, fruits have medicinal properties. In folk medicine, an infusion of flowers (less often - from leaves and berries) of elderberry is used as a diaphoretic, diuretic and astringent, as well as a rinse and poultices. In terms of its medicinal properties, this plant is similar to the black elderberry (Sambucus nigra).

The plant is poisonous. When using flowers, berries, leaves, especially fresh ones, amygdalin poisoning can occur, which turns into hydrocyanic acid. Elderberry fruits are quite pleasant in taste, you need to be very careful so that they do not fall into the hands of children.

Plants should not be taken by people who suffer from ulcerative colitis, diabetes, Crohn's disease. Also, caution should be taken when taking during pregnancy, remember that cyanide is included in the plant stems, it is because of this plant that it is poisonous. Be sure to check with your doctor before use, especially about the dosage, in order to avoid poisoning.

Elderberry (Sambucus ebulus) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the honeysuckle family. It grows in many regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa and North America.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing elderberry herbaceous:

Cultivation:

  • Elder grass grows best in full sun or partial shade.
  • The soil must be fertile and well-drained. Elder grass can grow on both acidic and alkaline soils.
  • Propagation is by seeds or cuttings.
  • Seeds should be collected in late summer or early autumn when they are fully ripe. Before sowing, they must be soaked for 24 hours.
  • Cuttings are harvested in late summer or early autumn. They should be about 10-15 cm long and have several knots. Once harvested, the cuttings can be stored in the refrigerator until spring.
  • Seeds are sown in the ground in spring or autumn to a depth of 1-2 cm. Plants grown from seeds usually bloom in the second year.
  • Cuttings can be planted in the ground in spring or early autumn to a depth of 2-3 cm. Before planting, the cuttings should be treated with a plant growth regulator.
  • The plant needs regular watering during dry summers.
  • In early spring, it is necessary to prune the plant, removing old and damaged branches.
  • Elderberry herbaceous does not require special care and does not suffer from diseases and pests.

Workpiece:

  • For the preparation of elder grass, it is recommended to collect flowers and fruits in their maturity.
  • Flowers are best collected in dry weather, when they are open and not faded. Cut the flower stalks off the plant and lay the flowers out on a paper surface to dry. Store them in a closed jar or bag in a cool, dry place.
  • The fruits are harvested in September-October, when they are fully ripe and have a characteristic dark purple color. Cut the fruit in half and remove the seeds from them. To avoid the toxicity of the seeds, they should be soaked for several days, changing the water every day. Then dry the seeds in the air or in the sun.

Storage:

  • Flowers should be stored in a closed jar or bag in a cool and dry place. If the flowers have not been completely dried before storage, they may begin to rot.
  • Elderberry seeds are best stored in a dry and cool place. If they have not been soaked, then they must be soaked before storage to avoid toxicity.
  • When storing elderberry fruits, it must be borne in mind that they quickly deteriorate. It is best to store them in a cool place for several days or use them to make tinctures and decoctions.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

TideGen Helical Subsea Turbine for Tidal Energy 08.08.2012

The original TideGen helical subsea turbine will be installed in the Strait of Fundy in the northeastern Gulf of Maine, which borders Canada and the United States. This bay is known for its record high tides, so the turbine will run at high speeds and be subjected to heavy loads.

The TideGen project is different from most underwater turbines, which have wide "fans" similar to their land-based counterparts. In contrast, TideGen is a tubular cylindrical design with spiral bladed blades. This design is highly efficient, reliable and resistant to storms. The turbine is located horizontally at the bottom. It is easy to install and does not interfere with navigation.

The first turbine will generate 150 kW at a water flow rate of 11 km/h. Later, it is planned to install another 19 turbines, which will bring the capacity of the underwater power plant to 3 MW. That's enough to power 1200 homes and small businesses in Maine.

This project can have a significant impact on tidal energy. If the settlement price for electricity (21,5 cents per kWh) can be achieved, the $21 million project will be profitable and will be a good incentive for the development of this type of generating capacity.

In the US alone, converting the movement of waves and tides into electrical energy can supply thousands of terawatt-hours per year, or about a third of all electricity currently used in the US. At the same time, compared to solar panels and windmills, underwater turbines generate a given power continuously, without large jumps.
