Deathmakers greet you!

Ancient Rome
Ancient Rome

Phraseologism: Deathmakers greet you!

Meaning: The slogan of those who go to some business, an enterprise, the end of which is unknown (jokingly). The phrase is addressed to those who do not participate in this risky enterprise.

Origin: From Latin: Morituri te salutant! According to the Roman historian Suetonius (Gaius Suetonius Tranquill, c. 70 - c. 140), under the emperor Claudius, gladiators who went to battle in the circus greeted him with similar words. The expression is better known in another form: Ave, Caesar! Morituri te salutant! - Hello, Caesar! (Bow to you, Caesar!). Those who are about to die greet you!

Random phraseology:

To see the speck in someone else's eye and not see the beam in your own.

Meaning:

About those who condemn others for small mistakes, not noticing their own major shortcomings.

Origin:

From the Bible. New Testament, Gospel of Matthew (7:3): "And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not feel the beam in your eye?" Also Art. 5: "Hypocrisy! first take the log out of your eye, and then you will see how to take the speck out of your brother's eye." Kozma Prutkov gave his own version of this phrase in the traditions of Russian archaic speech, which gives the well-known saying a humorous character: "Seeing a wreck in the eye of your neighbor, you do not see in your lower beam" (from "The Ceremonial of Burial of the Body in the Bose of the Deceased Lieutenant and Cavalier Thaddeus Kozmich P. ..", note of Father Gerasim, regimental priest). "Below" in translation into modern Russian is "even ...".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Calcium battery that gets energy from the air 22.02.2024

Scientists from Fudan University have announced the creation of a calcium battery that is potentially superior to traditional lithium batteries.

The development of calcium batteries opens a new era in energy storage, providing more affordable and safer solutions compared to traditional lithium batteries. This is an important step towards sustainable and efficient use of energy.

A unique feature of the new calcium batteries is the ability to create them in the form of thin threads that can be used to produce fabrics, opening new horizons in the field of technology and smart clothing.

The limited reserves of lithium on Earth and questions about the safety of its use are pushing for the search for alternatives. Calcium-oxygen batteries offer a promising solution because they take oxygen from the air during discharge, increasing the battery's chemical efficiency.

However, the problem previously was the formation of calcium oxide, which led to the accumulation of dead weight in the battery. Chinese scientists have developed a liquid electrolyte and a two-electron reaction that allows the electrodes to recover at room temperature, ensuring stable battery operation.

Experimental calcium-oxygen batteries have demonstrated the ability to withstand 700 charge and discharge cycles, making them a promising option for future energy solutions.
