Katran. Interesting plant facts

Katran Tatar

Katran is a large coarse perennial herbaceous plant from the tumbleweed group.

In Ukraine, it grows mainly in the steppe zone along the slopes of gullies, steppe areas, edges of ravine forests, on the coastal sands of the northern Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. As rare endangered plants, all types of katran are listed in the Red Book of Russia and are subject to the strictest protection.

Katran is an interesting plant in many respects, forming a rather dense globular shrub densely covered with numerous creamy white flowers. Emits a strong honey aroma that attracts numerous insects. The leaves are large, bluish, reminiscent of cabbage leaves.

Scattered on the emerald carpet of the spring steppe, the sheets of the katran resemble light clouds that have fallen from the sky blue to the ground. It is no coincidence that the katran is sung in many songs and thoughts.

Katran Tatar

In the Sea of \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbAzov, in the steppe part of the Crimea, in the North Caucasus, young white seedlings of katran have long been used as food instead of cabbage and asparagus. In early spring, conical sprouts of katran were cut and boiled in salt water, and then cooked with breadcrumbs in oil. The thick roots of the katran penetrate the soil to a depth of several meters, so the plant is not afraid of drought.

The roots contain a lot of sugars and starch, and the seeds contain 17,7-40,3% fatty oil, which, although it has a slightly bitter taste, like camelina, is quite suitable for eating.

In the Kherson region and Zaporozhye, in the steppe Crimea, the katran was widely used for food. A wide variety of dishes were prepared: stewed heads of cabbage and young leaves, heads of cabbage with breadcrumbs and meat, etc.

Recently, experiments have been conducted on the introduction of katran into culture as a fodder plant.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Unmanned electric gyrocar 11.06.2018

The Chinese company Beijing Lingyun Intelligent Technology from Beijing has developed an autonomous two-wheeled electric vehicle Lingyun 1703 with a body balancing system.

Lingyun 1703 resembles a motorcycle covered with a streamlined body: it has only two wheels, one seat inside and as many as two doors to climb into it from the left or right - whichever is more convenient. The length of the gyrocar is three meters, the width is only a meter. Its main feature is that a gyroscope is installed under the only seat, which allows the electric car to maintain a horizontal position.

In order for the Lingyun 1703 to maintain balance even when parked, the engineers additionally equipped it with retractable wheels that are located under the doors. Since the gyrocar is designed for autonomous movement, there are no traditional controls in its cabin: only the entertainment system screen is installed in front of the only passenger. The maximum speed is 100 km / h, the power reserve on one charge is about 100 kilometers.

The creator of the Chinese gyrocar, Zhu Lin-yong, claims that he was inspired by the 1961 Ford Gyron concept when creating it. If all plans to attract investors are implemented (first he found 470 thousand dollars, then 10 million, now he needs to find another 30 million), Lin-Yong hopes to organize mass production of Lingyun 1703 at a price of about 15 thousand dollars with an output of 5-10 thousand cars per year.
