Muddle instead of music

Shostakovich D.D.
Shostakovich D.D.

Phraseologism: Muddle instead of music.

Meaning: Criticism of something that does not meet official ideological criteria.

Origin: The title of an article in the newspaper Pravda (January 1936, 26), which sharply criticized the opera Katerina Izmailova by the Soviet composer D. D. Shostakovich and his music in general, is "nervous, convulsive, seizure-like", which, as stated in article, "hoots, quacks, puffs and suffocates." In a word, "mess". The article appeared in the newspaper Pravda, the central organ of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks, without a signature, which, according to the custom of that time, meant that it expressed the official point of view of the party leadership. This publication contained a direct warning to the "formalists" in general and to Shostakovich in particular: "This game of abstruse things may end badly."

Random phraseology:

hereditary enemy.

Meaning:

About historical stereotypes of an unfriendly country and its inhabitants.

Origin:

From German: das Erbfeind. From French: "L" ennemi hercditaire". This expression was well known before, but became especially popular after the release of the play "Getz von Berlichingen" by Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832). The character of the play, Weislingen, speaks like this about Turkey ( scene "In the castle of Goetz", act 1). The expression became popular in Europe and was applied to different countries. Thus, in the XNUMXth century, France and Germany considered each other hereditary, hereditary enemies.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Black Silicon for Efficient Solar Panels 20.10.2012

Solar panels convert only three-quarters of the sun's energy into electricity. Thus, to the initially low efficiency, the loss of the entire infrared part of the spectrum is added, which is an unacceptable waste. Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute have developed a new material for solar cells that also captures infrared light.

A material called black silicon is very promising, and recently German scientists managed to double the efficiency of solar cells based on it.

Due to the fact that solar panels simply cannot turn a quarter of the energy of the sun's rays into electricity, not only energy is lost, but also the heating of solar panels occurs, which reduces their service life and further reduces efficiency. One way to overcome this problem is to use black silicon, a material that absorbs almost all sunlight, including infrared radiation, and converts it into electricity.

Black silicon is obtained by irradiating standard silicon with femtosecond laser pulses in a gaseous medium containing sulfur. During this process, sulfur atoms are attached to the atomic lattice of silicon. In conventional silicon, infrared light lacks the energy to excite electrons and convert them into electricity. It is like a high wall that cannot be overcome in one jump. But due to the inclusion of sulfur atoms, black silicon forms a kind of intermediate levels that facilitate the "jumping" of electrons. By changing the parameters of the laser pulse, the scientists were able to change the height of the intermediate levels and increase the return of electrons to the maximum level.

Initially, the developers plan to simply add black silicon cells to conventional solar panels. Tandem cells made of ordinary and black silicon will be only a couple of percent more efficient than conventional ones, but in this way it is possible to upgrade a large number of existing solar panels, which will give a good increase in energy.

In the future, black silicon can be used as the main material for the manufacture of solar panels, although this will require the development of special automatic laser systems.
