Which telescope has a higher resolution - radio or optical?

The shortcoming of radio telescopes for a long time was their low resolution, reaching even for large radio telescopes only a few minutes of arc.

The problem was solved by using the technique of interferometry, when the signals falling on different radio telescopes are collected and processed on a computer. In this case, two or more radio telescopes behave as a single instrument with a diameter equal to the distance between the individual radio telescopes.

Using simultaneously three radio telescopes installed in the USA, Australia and South Africa, astronomers were able to see the structure of the pulsar, located at a distance of 1600 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Sail. A cloud of hot gas emitting radio waves has a diameter of 500 kilometers, and in its center is a neutron star with a diameter of about 10 kilometers.

If an optical telescope had such resolution, it could see a large virus on the surface of the Moon from the Earth.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Wind turbines affect the climate 03.05.2005

It is well known that the hydroelectric reservoir changes the climate in the surrounding area, and the thermal power plant, emitting carbon dioxide, affects the global climate. But now there is evidence that large wind farms, consisting of hundreds of windmills, can have a small but real impact on the climate of the surrounding area.

The height of modern wind turbines is up to 100 meters, the blade span is up to 50 meters, and even larger installations are being designed.

Computer simulations conducted at Duke University (USA) showed that large groups of windmills can increase wind speed near the ground by an average of 0,6 meters per second and increase air temperature by 0,7 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the evaporation of moisture from the soil will increase around the wind power plant by 0,3 millimeters per day.

All these data are averaged over 24 hours, and in the early morning the changes will be greater: the wind speed will increase by 1,5 meters per second in a few hours, and the temperature will increase by 2 degrees Celsius. The total capacity of the power plant of 44 generators is 30 megawatts.
