Widely known to computer users, 3,5" magnetic floppy disks and disk drives (FDD - FloppyDiskDrive) for them are now becoming obsolete everywhere. The disk drive of my computer did not escape this fate, which is why it was dismantled. But so that it does not remain unemployed , I found a useful, in my opinion, application for it - I made on its basis a miniature desktop machine for grinding and polishing the surfaces of small parts made of metals and plastics.
To do this, the drive must be disassembled and all unnecessary parts removed from the chassis. You only need to leave the board with the disk drive electric motor (Fig. 1).
The motor stator with windings is attached directly to the board, and the rotor is a ring magnet glued to a metal disk, the axis of which rotates in a bearing.
In the drive, the operation of the electric motor is controlled by a specialized BA6992P5 microcircuit using sensors installed on the board between the stator coils. In order to use the drive in a grinding device, it is necessary to temporarily separate the board from the chassis (Fig. 2) and close the conclusions 1 and 16 of the specified microcircuit with a wire jumper - they will serve as a common (negative) wire. In addition, you need to connect pins 13 and 19 of the microcircuit to each other.
The positive power wire is soldered to the printed circuit conductor of the board connected to pin 21. By the way, the necessary designations are often indicated on the board ("GND" and "+ 5V) A miniature toggle switch is soldered into the gap of one of the wires. After that, the board is installed in its original place. Toggle switch mounted in a convenient place on one of the side walls of the chassis.
The grinding device can be powered from any source of constant voltage 5...9 V, current consumption - about 350 mA.
The assembled device is covered from above with a protective plate made of thin plastic or, in extreme cases, with a sheet of thick paper (Fig. 3), having previously cut a hole for the motor rotor. A rigid faceplate should be attached to the rotor from the outside with glue or screws, on which it will be possible to install replaceable disks with sandpaper of different grain sizes, with a cloth or felt pad for polishing, covered with GOI paste.
In some drives, control chips BA6992PP, BA6995PP are installed on the board. Their connection is the same as above.
To check the load capacity of the finished device, I forcibly stopped the rotor of the switched on electric motor for 10 ... 15 minutes. It turned out that the heating of its windings and microcircuits is significantly less than the maximum allowable (+85 °C). Therefore, the operating voltage of the device can be safely adjusted within 5 ... 9 V, depending on the nature of the work performed.
