Phraseologism: Nodding acquaintance.

Meaning: Superficial, cursory acquaintance with someone.

Origin: The expression is actually Russian, connected with Russian etiquette. Previously, it was customary for men among the upper classes to raise their hats when greeting, if acquaintances or friends met, only friends shook hands with each other, and only close friends or relatives hugged when they met, the expression hat acquaintance shows that acquaintances are only friends, not friends. According to another version, the origin of the expression is connected with the fact that outside the house it was customary to walk with a covered head, while at home they took off their hats.
