Sewing with wooden needles

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Sew with wooden needles.

Meaning: Robbery (obsolete irony).

Origin: By a wooden needle here is meant a robber's club. The expression was used in the language of the last century: "There was a fair at which the fishing people - tailors who sew with wooden needles on high roads, emptied an entire shop, breaking or digging up a whole farce" (V. Dal, "Underground. Pictures of Russian life").

Random phraseology:

Combine business with pleasure.

Meaning:

Used literally.

Origin:

From Latin: "Utile cum dulci". Literally: "Useful pleasant." From the work "The Art of Poetry" (verse 343) by the Roman poet Horace (Quintus Horace Flaccus, 65-8 BC), who speaks of the ideal poet: "The one who combines pleasant with useful is worthy of all approval." Horace probably borrowed this idea from the Roman historian Polybius, who in his History wrote that one can "at the same time derive benefit and pleasure from history."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Water cannons for submarines 15.07.2019

Japan has begun development work on Project 29SS submarines, which will replace the 2009 Soryu-class diesel-electric Stirling-electric submarines.

Diesel-Stirling-electric submarines of the Soryu (Japanese Blue Dragon) class are a further development of the Oyashio-class submarines, from which they differ in increased displacement and the installation of an air-independent Stirling engine. They became the largest post-war submarines in Japan and are considered to be the most high-tech and quiet among conventionally powered submarines.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Corporation has been developing a new generation of submarines. The project should be ready by 2020, and the first submarine will enter service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force around 2031. The hull will generally follow the shape of the previous generation submarines, but for better hydrodynamics, engineers will put the retractable devices guard lower and move the horizontal rudders from it.

According to the calculations of the Japanese, this should increase the secrecy of the vessel. The new submarine will receive a jet propulsion instead of a propeller, as well as lithium-ion batteries as a quieter power source. The armament of the submarines is likely to remain the same as the previous generation: six 533 mm torpedo tubes for heavy torpedoes and Harpoon cruise anti-ship missiles.
