welfare state

John Maynard Keynes
John Maynard Keynes

Phraseologism: The welfare state.

Meaning: A state with a high standard of living, which is ensured by a reasonable and active policy of the state itself.

Origin: A term that was formed on the basis of the doctrine (Keynesianism) of the famous English economist John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946). This doctrine was expounded by him in the book "The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money" (1935). Usually used ironically in relation to the direct meaning of the expression.

Random phraseology:

Russia is focusing.

Meaning:

About self-isolation of Russia.

Origin:

The original source of the expression is the words of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (1856-1882) of the government of Alexander II, Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov (1798-1883), a lyceum friend of A. S. Pushkin. In the original: "Russia is reproached for isolating itself and keeping silent. They say that Russia is pouting. Russia is not pouting, it is gathering strength." Appointed to the post of minister in 1856, after the defeat of Russia in the Crimean War, the prince sought to pursue a balanced policy, avoiding the country's involvement in military coalitions and conflicts. The great powers perceived this as Russia's desire for self-isolation, withdrawal from world politics.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Mechanical skeleton controlled by human neurons 29.04.2021

Scientists at North Carolina State University in the United States have developed a new kind of mechanical skeleton that does not require pre-programming, like traditional robots, it connects to the human body to freely control the mechanical skeleton.

A large number of different mechanical prostheses have been developed around the world for patients with disabilities to help people live a normal life. However, these prostheses do not fit well into the human body and are not easy to manage.

In recent years, with the advent of brain-computer interface neurotherapy, scientists hope to develop a mechanical skeleton controlled by neurons to help people with disabilities.

Researchers have developed a neuron-controlled mechanical skeleton for a patient who lost mobility in the calf of his left leg. Through training, this patient coordinated and synchronized the mechanical skeleton and calves.

A 57-year-old patient lost sensation from the knee to the ankle of his left leg. The researchers connected a mechanical skeleton sensor to the spawn to detect a bioelectrical signal. After five workouts, the patient was able to do things he couldn't before (standing up, squatting, and lifting things).

The researchers plan to use mechanical bones and allow more patients to participate in the test and perform complex activities such as obstacle avoidance to further improve handling and stability.
