tussock of view

Maksim Gorky
Maksim Gorky

Phraseologism: Point of view.

Meaning: About a narrow or self-serving view of things that does not even deserve the title of a point of view (iron.).

Origin: From the article "On a bump and a point" (1933) by Maxim Gorky (pseudonym of Alexei Maksimovich Peshkov, 1868-1936): "There is a bump and a point of view. This must be distinguished. It is known that bumps are a feature of the swamp and that they remain in place "You can't see much from the height of a hummock. Point of view is something different: it is formed as a result of observation, comparison, study by a writer of various phenomena of life. The wider the social experience of a writer, the higher his point of view, the wider his intellectual horizons, the it is clearer to him what is in contact with what on earth and what are the interactions of these rapprochements, contacts.

Random phraseology:

Chauvinism.

Meaning:

Aggressive ultranationalism.

Origin:

The primary source was popular prints ("pictures from Epinal") on military topics, the author of which was the French artist Nicolas Toussaint Charlet. The constant hero of these pictures is the good soldier Chauvin. Later, the same lubok character became the main character in the comedy "Three-Colored Cockade" (authors - the Cognard brothers). The play was staged in March 1831. The comedy was a success, which contributed to the popularity of the image of the militant recruit Chauvin, who gave birth to a new concept - chauvinism.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

semi-automatic driver 27.07.2012

Graduate student Sterling Anderson of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed an original automatic driving system. Unlike fully automatic cars, which still scare drivers, the new system works in semi-automatic mode and most of the time the car is controlled by a person. The system uses an onboard video camera and a laser rangefinder to detect obstacles and dangerous situations. A special data analysis algorithm helps the robot to determine safe zones, for example, to bypass standing cars, poles, etc. The system allows the driver to independently control the vehicle, but in case of danger, it takes control.

First of all, the new system avoids accidents. So, during the tests, the driver sent a car equipped with a new system to a barrel standing on the road. Despite the actions of the driver, the car itself went around the obstacle and immediately transferred control to the driver after the obstacle was left behind. More than 1200 tests of the system have already been carried out, during which there were only a few collisions - mainly due to malfunctions in the video camera, which could not identify various obstacles. But in most cases, the system successfully helped drivers avoid a collision.

The developers believe that their system has a number of advantages over fully autonomous vehicles. First of all, it does not require many sensors and special road infrastructure, GPS, control stations, etc. All navigation and control functions are taken over by the driver, and the robot only helps in dangerous situations when human attention and reaction fail.

True, there is a side effect of using such a system. During the tests, the car with the system turned on drove through the obstacle course much faster than with it turned off. The testers often took it personally, proud of their skill, and did not even notice that the car quickly and accurately taxis independently, going around the obstacle. On production vehicles, this can provoke drivers into dangerous, risky driving.
