Kayak on ice

Anyone who has ever tried to sit in a kayak knows how difficult it is to manage it. Coaches have to work hard with young athletes before they independently rush the unstable little boats through the water. And then, in the midst of training, winter comes ... In three or four months of inactivity, you can completely lose the skills acquired in the summer. In winter, classes are held "dry": theory, crosses, etc., but all this will not replace the kayak itself.

Yu. F. Zavgorodny, who graduated from two universities (university and institute of physical education), liked the work of a rowing coach. Master of Sports of the USSR, a teacher, he could not put up with the winter "downtime" of kayakers, he wanted to fill the gap at all costs.

Figured, searched, mastered. And then an unusual device was born - a winter kayak, which can glide like an arrow on ice, on asphalt. The device fully provides conditions reproducing rowing on a real boat.

The main part of a land kayak is a wooden bar, with seats and a footrest fixed on top of it. Fixed skids or blades of old skates are attached to the lower part through gaskets (for asphalt pavements, bearings can successfully replace them). The front skid is structurally made swivel. A tiller is mounted on the upper part of the axle, which is turned by the toes of the feet.

"Kayaking behavior" gives the simulator the location of the skids on the same axis.

Up to four people can simultaneously engage in a winter kayak, for this you need to install additional seats, footrests and skids. The optimal seat height from the ice surface is 100-150 mm.

In training, the athlete sits on the seat, resting his feet on the stops so that the end of the tiller is between the toes of the legs. In order for the device to "stand quietly" on the ice and slide on it, a special device is used like a kayak paddle, the blades of which are replaced by sharp steel tips.

Under the guidance of Zavgorodny last summer, the guys made 10 simplified winter kayaks. The first training camp took place in the countryside on the Samara River. The locals were stunned to see how incomprehensible devices are rapidly rushing across the ice of the river.

The start was taken at a distance of 10 km. Young kayakers, who had only two years of experience with rowing, covered this distance in 30 minutes. The speed of a home-made device turned out to be much higher than the speed of a real kayak.

Tests have shown that it is possible to master a winter kayak in just three training sessions. Reseeding then on a real boat, the athlete feels much more confident. Who knows, maybe the appearance of this unusual device will open the first pages in the life of a new independent winter sport.

Kayak on rails

Pyotr Medvedev, the coach of kayakers of the 15th State Bearing Plant (Volzhsk, Volgograd Region), also made a kayak on skates for his pets so as not to interrupt training during the long winter months. But here are the shortcomings that an experienced athlete found: if the ice is too thin, there are cracks on the distance, and finally, if it is purging and snow drifts are everywhere, you will have to forget about training. In addition, there may not be ice nearby.

Based on these considerations, P. Medvedev, with the assistance of factory workers, designed, manufactured and tested a truly universal "substitute kayak". Its operation is not at all connected with the presence of water or ice and does not depend on the vagaries of the weather. And he made a kayak that "floats" on ... rails.

The board is mounted on four bearings. The seat and foot rest are attached to the top. Instead of an oar, a pole with steel tips. The simulator is installed on rails (metal corners 25X25) laid on sleepers (bricks). The sports narrow-gauge railway has the shape of an ellipse, and its unfolded length is approximately 150 m. The ring of the road allows 5-6 athletes to train at once.

A kayak is not a sled; you won’t get far on it without skill. Axles with bearings are located so that if the athlete sat down incorrectly, that is, did not maintain the required balance, then the board itself "sits" on the rails and does not budge.

The rowing conditions are very close to natural, the speed of the projectile is about 10 km in 45 minutes, the rate of "rowing" is from 76 to 120 strokes per minute, depending on the skill of the rower.

At the 15th GPZ, kayaks are used year-round both on ice and on rails. With the help of simple devices, in just one year, it was possible to prepare one candidate for the master, 23 first-class athletes, 20 athletes of the 2nd category, 13 of the third and 19 of the youth. Here are your DIYs!

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

New generation of OctaBus memory interface 08.11.2016

Macronix has introduced a new generation of OctaBus memory interface. According to the manufacturer, the development is well suited for IoT and automotive electronics. A small number of pins - 12 - allows you to simplify the device diagram and the topology of the printed circuit board, and reduce their cost. At the same time, high performance is maintained.

Macronix OctaBus memory subsystem will be offered in three main product lines
The original version of OctaFlash, introduced in 2015, provided a data transfer rate of 400 MB/s using eight lanes. The new option is suitable not only for Serial NOR flash memory (OctaFlash), but also for RAM (OctaRAM). The use of a bus with common I/O lines simplifies the design and unifies printed circuit boards. OctaRAM is said to provide performance comparable to DDR2.

One of the strengths of the OctaBus implementation is the simplification of MCP products that combine different types of memory chips. The use of separate buses makes it necessary to increase the number of pins in the BGA package, which requires an increase in the package itself. According to the manufacturer, the transition to OctaBus has reduced the size of a typical case from 9 x 9 mm to 6 x 8 mm.

The Macronix OctaBus memory subsystem will be offered in three main product lines. These are OctaFlash flash memory chips with a density from 256 Mb to 2 Gb, OctaRAM memory chips with a density from 32 Mb to 128 Gb, and OctaMCP modules, including 512 Mb of OctaFlash memory and 64 Mb of OctaRAM memory.
