Alfred Sauvy
Alfred Sauvy

Phraseologism: Third World.

Meaning: Developing countries.

Origin: From French: "Tiers monde". From an article in the journal "L" Observateur "(1952, August 14), written by the French economist, sociologist and demographer Alfred Sauvy (1898-1990). The expression is formed by analogy with the French "third estate". To the "third world" A. Sauvy included the developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. The expression became widely known thanks to Georges Balandir's book The Third World (1956).

Random phraseology:

Start with the basics.

Meaning:

Start at the beginning (often frowned upon).

Origin:

The idea of the beginning lies in the word "az" - the name of the first letter of the Russian alphabet. The word "ases" called the letters, the whole letter in general. "Writing the basics" in the old days meant "writing letters" and "learning to read and write." Hence - the figurative use of the word "basics" - "the foundations, the beginning of something", which has become a source of phraseology to start from the basics, i.e. "from the very beginning, from the very foundations, laying the foundation on an empty, bare spot."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Water and oil mix 01.05.2004

Australian chemist Richard Pashley discovered that oil does mix with water. But for this, it is necessary to remove the gases dissolved in it from the water.

If the water is 99,999 percent devoid of gases, then by itself, without the addition of emulsifiers and surfactants, an oil-in-water emulsion occurs. Moreover, it does not delaminate even when the dissolved gases return to the water.

The discovery will be useful in pharmaceuticals, perfumery, cooking and other areas.
