Origin: Central and Southern Europe, as well as Western Asia.

Perennial.

The stems are numerous, simple, less often branched, straight, densely pubescent with multicellular hairs. The leaves are heart-ovate, acute, the edges of the leaf blade are crenate.

Flowers 16-35 are collected in whorls; corolla two-lipped, purple, sometimes white. The fruit is an ovoid brownish smooth nut.

Blooms in June-September. The fruits ripen in August-September.

It grows in open waste areas, as well as on clay cliffs and limestone slopes.

European-Near Asian species. Found in Eastern and Southern Europe, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and the Caucasus.

The aerial part of the plant contains a greenish essential oil with a very pungent odor.

In the last century, whorled sage was the most popular spice. Its leaves give food a strong aroma with a specific cool smell.

In the Caucasus they are eaten as a seasoning for fatty meat dishes; in Western Europe and Central Asia, dry leaves are used to flavor beer, as a spicy and aromatic seasoning for cheese, fish soup, meat, game dishes, poultry, and cold meat salads.

The powder is used as a substitute for rosemary in soups, game and poultry dishes, processed cheese, and cold meat salads. Sage is often added to meat and egg-rice pies.

  • Tea to strengthen the immune system: mix 1 tablespoon of dried leaves of sage with 1 cup of boiling water. Leave for 10-15 minutes, then strain and drink. This tea can help strengthen the immune system, improve digestion, and calm the nervous system.
  • Anti-inflammatory agent: mix 1 tablespoon of dried leaves of sage with 1 cup of boiling water. Leave for 10-15 minutes, then strain. Use the resulting product to wipe the skin in areas of inflammation or to gargle for diseases of the upper respiratory tract.
  • Bath for tired feet: Brew 2-3 tablespoons of dry leaves of whorled sage in 1 liter of boiling water. Leave to brew for 30 minutes, then strain and add the resulting infusion to a bath of warm water. Take this bath for 15-20 minutes to improve blood circulation and relieve tired legs.

Cosmetology:

  • Face tonic: Infuse 2 tablespoons of dried sage leaves in 200 ml of boiling water. Leave the infusion for 15 minutes, then strain and add 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Store the toner in the refrigerator and use it to care for problem skin.
  • Mask for the face: mix 2 tablespoons of crushed fresh leaves of sage with 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply to face and leave for 15-20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This mask will help moisturize and soothe your skin.
