Focus Description:

In the background, near the back curtain, a beautifully painted chest stands on a simple table. On the sides, in the middle ground, there are two small pedestals with steps. The host of the program comes out and begins to talk at length about tricks and conjurers. The magician-performer looks impatiently from behind the scenes and says in an undertone: "Couldn't it be shorter?" The host, paying no attention, continues to speak, and the performer looks out again.

- You're bothering me, - says the leader.

- I ask you to be shorter, - the performer answers, - I have everything ready.

The presenter continues to speak, and the performer, unable to stand it, enters the stage with a large veil thrown over his arm.

- I told you that you are bothering me, - the presenter is indignant.

- No, now you're bothering me!

A heated argument ensues, and the leader, having ascended the steps to the pedestal, continues to speak from there (Fig. 120).

The performer, approaching the pedestal, stands on the step and, throwing a veil over the debater (Fig. 121), says: - Now let's see who is bothering whom!

Having straightened the coverlet on the leader, he takes the top of the coverlet and, shaking it a little, quickly pulls it off. The leader has disappeared.

- That's better, - the performer says and goes to the second pedestal. Standing on the steps, he throws a veil over the pedestal, and it takes on the outlines of a human figure (Fig. 122).

He pulls off the veil - an assistant stands on the pedestal (Fig. 123).

- I really need you. Help.

- How can I help you? - asks the assistant, descending from the pedestal.

- Remove this talker, - the performer answers, pointing to the pedestal from which the presenter disappeared.

The assistant easily raises the pedestal, and the audience sees that there is nothing inside. Then the assistant removes his pedestal as well.

Here we have given excerpts from the text of the conversation between the presenter and the performer. This text is by no means obligatory and is given only as an example of a possible dialogue.

By acquainting the audience with this number, we introduce them to the course of professional devices that help magicians perform illusions. Our trick will work especially well on a stage where there is a hatch, but you can do without a hatch, although this will be less effective. Tricks with disappearing through hatches are often performed even in the circus arena and always make a good impression on the audience, but in the arena this is associated with large and difficult preparatory work. It is necessary to dig special underground passages, strengthen them with strong walls and supply them with reliable hatches made at the level of the arena. The viewer has to mask the hatches with a floor, which is intricately painted. The pattern should mask the cutouts of the hatches well.

For the first time, the system of "underground economy" was developed by us in 1934 in the Leningrad circus for staging an extravaganza based on Gogol's story "The Night on the Eve of Ivan Kupala". Now such a system with both two and three hatches connected by a curtain move is widely used in many circuses.

On the stage with a hatch, things are much simpler. If there is no finished hatch, then with the permission of the administration you will have to make it yourself.

Props:

Luke.

Two pedestals.

Two rugs 70x100 cm.

Large lined bedspread, beautifully painted. Its size is 250x250 cm. The hatch is arranged very simply. At the place you need, cut out two boards in the floor, as shown by the dotted line in fig. 163.

Focus Who's stopping whom?
Fig. 163

Make the cuts at a distance of 60 cm from each other. Considering the width of the stage floor boards to be at least 20 cm, we get a cutout of 40x60 cm. This is quite enough for a person to crawl through our hatch. Make cuts very precisely and carefully.

The hatch door (shield) will have to be knocked down from other boards, strictly making sure that they fit exactly to the floor boards both in size and in appearance. Adjust the hatch so that it fits into the hole very well, closes it easily, tightly and would not be noticeable to the audience.

On fig. 164, all the metal parts of the hatch are clearly visible, which is shown from below from under the floor of the stage. First, screw massive, well-moving hinges P to one side of it very tightly with screws. Large hinges from gates are very convenient for this purpose. Then adjust the opening of the hatch and screw on two locking valves 3, which are best done on purpose. They must be durable, easy to slide and tightly cover the hatch from below. On both sides of the hatch, strengthen two iron brackets C. A strong iron pin-pin Ш is pushed into them, which is locked with a lock when the hatch is not in use.

Fig. 164

To prepare the hatch for an illusion session, open the lock from below, pull out the pin completely and move one of the locks. The second lock is moved from below at the moment of action and only at the signal of the performer. In our room, the hatch can be prepared, that is, opened in advance, as soon as a pedestal is placed above it. To better mask the hatch, it’s good to lay a small carpet or a small rug on it, roll up the end of which at the right time and expose the hole. As soon as the hatch is used and closed from below, immediately remove the pedestal, quietly spread the rug, roll it out and close the hole from the eyes of the audience.

Well rehearse lowering into the hatch. For the first time, get down from the pedestal slowly, raising your hands up. Don't forget to put a convenient ladder under the hole below. Then, gradually, the passage time is accelerated, while monitoring the purity of execution.

When demonstrating the number, as soon as the assistant descends, they immediately quickly and silently close the hatch, slide the valves and, having pushed the king pin, lock it. On the arena of the circus, no more than one or two seconds is spent on the "disappearance" of a person. When performing the described number, you can go down much more slowly, but not more than in six to seven seconds.

The pedestals are so easy to make that we will limit ourselves to only brief instructions. The left (from the viewers) pedestal for disappearance (Fig. 165) consists of an upper platform with a hatch and a frame, which is made of plank laths, upholstered with 3 mm plywood, primed and painted with a pattern that hides the cutout of the hatch. Luke L rotates on hinges P. Hinges from wardrobes are convenient for this purpose. The hatch door is made in such a way that it can be easily opened up and locked with a latch XNUMX, which can be discreetly moved from above with your foot.

Focus Who's stopping whom?
Fig. 165

A load in the form of a heavy metal strip or weight is attached to the narrow side of hatch 1 (Fig. 166). One has only to move the latch with a boot, as the hatch, under the influence of the load, will immediately rise and take a vertical position. At this moment, a person will descend from the pedestal down - to the edge of the lower hatch in the floor of the stage - and immediately quickly close the hatch of the pedestal, locking it from below with the second latch. The size of the hatch in the pedestal is 40x60 cm. The axis of the hinge for rotating the hatch shield should be placed 10 cm from the edge of its long side. The operation of this hatch, like that of the stage hatch, must be carefully adjusted. Rehearse also quickly opening, climbing through the hatch and instantly closing it.

Focus Who's stopping whom?
Fig. 166

The right pedestal for the appearance is made the same as for the disappearance, but with the only difference that the cargo from the bottom of the hatch is attached to the other side-2. Latches on the shield are not needed: the hatch opens from the bottom up. After the person who was in the pedestal climbs up, the hatch, under the influence of the load attached to edge 2, will itself go down and slam shut. The hatch shield must be strong to withstand the weight of a person. To do this, a bar is nailed from below to side 2, on which the hatch will lie.

The height of the pedestal depends on the height of the assistants participating in this number. It is approximately 75 cm. The step is made 30 cm high. The upper platform is 75x75 cm.

Focus secret:

The secret is clear from the description of the props: the host disappears through the hatches and into the plinth and floor of the stage, and the assistant just as quickly appears from the hatch of the plinth on the right pedestal.

The demonstration of the number proceeds as follows. In advance, two pedestals are placed on the sides of the stage: to the right - for the assistant and to the left - for the leader. The hatch in the floor of the stage is opened as soon as a pedestal is placed on it. For lowering under the stage, a convenient ladder is placed below. An assistant is placed inside the right pedestal, who should appear at the right time.

The performer with a coverlet rises to the step of the left pedestal, and the presenter at this moment imperceptibly gropes for the valve with his foot. When the illusionist throws a veil over him, he immediately pushes the latch and quickly crouches, making sure that the hatch does not open ahead of time and is not visible from under the veil. The performer, having covered the leader with a veil, holds the cloak from the top in the middle with both hands, creating the illusion of the contour of a person (the lower ends of the veil should be at the level of the top platform of the pedestal). At this time, the presenter quickly descends through the opened upper hatch, immediately closes it on the lower latch and descends under the stage. Here, an assistant specially trained for this closes the hatch, locks it with latches and, after passing the king pin, locks it. As soon as the performer makes sure that the upper hatch is closed (the leader must notify this by a prearranged signal), he immediately removes his left hand from the coverlet, and with his right hand, with a sharp jerk, throws it up and puts it on his left hand.

The assistant, meanwhile, is sitting on the right pedestal, preparing for a quick ascent to the upper platform. At the signal of the illusionist, he crawls out, bent up, and, having closed the hatch, under the cover of the coverlet, gradually straightens to his full height. The performer pulls off the veil - and the audience sees an unexpected appearance. The assistant comes down from his pedestal and, going up to the left pedestal, makes sure that the rug covers the hatch. Then he easily lifts the pedestal and carries it backstage. Returning to the stage, he also carries away his pedestal.

Under the right pedestal, you can lay a rug in advance, and under the left one it is placed rolled up and only protrudes forward a little. When the assistant removes the pedestal, he imperceptibly stands with one foot on the edge of the rug and, moving the pedestal towards the back wall of the stage, rolls out the rug, closing the hatch with it.

To simplify, the left pedestal can not be sheathed on the back side with plywood, and the right one can be made without a hatch. In this case, when the performer covers the platform with a blanket, the assistant can slip unnoticed from behind under the blanket and stand on the platform.

Based on the use of hatches, you can come up with many different tricks yourself, so we advise you to work out the technique of performing the number as carefully as possible. Practice not only quickly disappearing down, but also appearing from under the stage to the top. The assistant must immediately close the hatch as soon as the assistant climbs through it.
