Basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

Sort by: Spatula (Lewisia)

Family: Purslane (Portulacaceae)

Origin: North America

Area: States of California, Oregon, Washington, Idago, Montana and British Columbia.

Chemical composition: Little studied.

Economic value: Spatula is a popular plant for rocky gardens and rocky slopes. Also used in landscaping and as an ornamental houseplant.

Legends and myths: The Shoshone Indians used spatula rhizomes as food and medicine. They called the plant "tok-nagin" ("returning to life") because the rhizomes could "revive" and continue to grow even if they were dug up and left in the sun for several days. Another legend says that a young Indian warrior was ambushed and seriously wounded. His comrades brought the rhizomes of the spatula and put them on the wounds. Soon the warrior recovered, and he was able to return to his tribe. In symbolism, the spatula is associated with the return to life and rebirth. Its rhizomes, which can "come to life", have become a symbol of eternal life and immortality.

Spatula (Lewisia resurrecting), Lewisia rediviva Pursh. Classification, synonyms, botanical description, nutritional value, cultivation

Spatula (lewicia resurrection)

A North American plant called the Spatulum (spatula) by the California Indians. Edible roots are quite large, white inside.

A small perennial herbaceous plant of the Montiaceae family. Its specific epithet rediviva ("reborn") refers to its ability to regenerate from dry and seemingly dead roots.

Peduncles leafless, 1-3 cm in height, bearing at the end a whorl of 5-6 linear bracts 5-10 mm long. One flower appears on each stem with 5-9 oval-shaped sepals. Their color varies from whitish to deep pink or lavender. Flowering occurs from April to July. The petals (usually about 15) are oblong and 18-35 millimeters long. When ripe, the spatula forms ovoid capsules with 6-20 almost round seeds.

The thick roots come into season in the spring and can survive extremely dry conditions. If harvested early enough in the season, they can be cleaned, boiled, and made into a jelly-like food.

Grows wild but deserves cultivation.

Spatula (lewicia resurrection)

The plant grows in the western part of North America from low and temperate elevations in pastures, open shrubs, in forests on dry stony or gravel soils.

The range extends from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon west of the Cascade Range to southern California and east to western Montana, Wyoming, northern Colorado and northern Arizona.

The roots were eaten by tribes such as the Shoshone and Flathead Indians as a rare delicacy. Traditionally ktunaksa was prepared with a spatula with hazel grouse. For Ktunaxa the bitter root is eaten with sugar; other tribes prefer to eat it with salt. The Lemhi Shoshone believed that the small red core found in the upper taproot had special abilities, in particular, it was able to stop the attack of a bear. The Plains Indians would peel and boil the root before eating it.

It grows in Columbia, Utah, Oregon and Arizona.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Spatula (Lewisia rediviva), also known as resurrection lewisia, is a beautifully flowered perennial plant native to western North America.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing a spatula:

Cultivation:

  • Spatula can be grown in full sun or partial shade, in medium soil with good drainage.
  • It is recommended to sow spatula seeds in early spring or late autumn.
  • The plant needs regular watering throughout the season.

Workpiece:

  • The spatula is not normally used for food, but can be used for landscaping or for making flower bouquets.
  • The flowers can be cut at the time of flowering and used to create flower bouquets.

Storage:

  • Spatula flowers cannot be stored fresh for a long time. It is best to use them immediately after cutting.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Transmission of electricity from space to Earth 21.05.2020

The Atlas V launch vehicle launched the X-37B military automatic mini-shuttle into Earth's orbit. This is the sixth successful flight of the "space plane", as this reusable vehicle is also called. Most of the tasks of the X-37B mission are solved by military programs and are classified, but not all. This time, the mini-shuttle launched a prototype photovoltaic module into orbit to transfer solar energy to the earth in the form of microwave radiation.

The energy transfer experiment was reported by the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), in whose depths the PRAM (Photovoltaic Radio-frequency Antenna Module) experimental module was developed. An experimental photovoltaic module with a radio frequency antenna is a block with sides of 30 cm. The block is equipped with conventional photovoltaic converters (solar cells) that convert the sunlight falling on them into electrical energy.

The energy received by the module in orbit is converted into microwave radiation and will be transmitted to a receiver located on the ground. The receiver, which is also a generator, converts microwave radiation into electricity and gives it to consumers. In space, the energy obtained in this way can be transmitted by a laser beam, for example, using a powerful infrared laser, but only microwave radiation can pass through the earth's atmosphere without significant absorption.

The experiment planned by the NRL laboratory is designed to study the process of energy conversion, the thermal characteristics of the processes and the efficiency of the technology in real conditions on a prototype. Similar methods of transferring power from an orbit where the sun shines 24 hours a day and at the same optimal angle to the solar panel can help provide electricity to remote corners of the planet, such as military bases or disaster zones.

Based on the results of PRAM, the next step will be to create a fully functional prototype system with installation on the satellite. Also at the next stage, a channel will be created to send energy to Earth. There is no doubt that turning such technology into a large-scale commercial power source could take decades and be extremely expensive for a long time, but for a number of tasks, the rapid deployment of propulsion systems on Earth with unlimited energy can be commensurate with the costs.
