The proposed adaptation to the desktop machine UK-4 "Skillful Hands" allows you to grind and polish flat parts, and if necessary, get thin boards and even veneer from them. I've been using it for over 0,3 years now and I'm very happy with it. I recently improved it a little, and now it can grind plates with a thickness of 10 to 0,05 mm with an adjustment accuracy of up to XNUMX mm.

The grinding attachment consists of a drum for sandpaper, an inclined table for the workpiece to be ground, and a unit for adjusting its inclination, which means the thickness of the material layer to be removed.

The skin wraps around the drum and is attached to it with a bar with M5 screws inserted flush into the groove. It is desirable to have two such drums - for coarse and fine skins - for rough and fine wood processing. The drum is machined from beech or birch. It has axial holes for the motor shaft, bearing and fasteners and a longitudinal groove for the bar, which is made of hard wood - for example, hornbeam.

The table can be cut from a sheet of textolite, getinaks, vinyl plastic, in extreme cases - from plywood 8-10 mm thick. On the base of the machine, it is installed on a card or piano loop. On the other side, an overlay with a screw is attached to it - for tilt adjustment. The screw enters a round nut mounted on the base of the machine using a bracket assembled from two corners. On the side surface of the nut, 30 notches are applied with a file, and 10 on the upper plane: they control the adjustment of the angle of the table.

The plate to be sanded is placed on the table and evenly, without stopping, is fed under the drum. Sanding softwood is undesirable, as the skin is quickly clogged with tar and wood dust. To suck dust during operation, the drum must be closed with a transparent casing (plexiglass) and a vacuum cleaner connected to it, and so that it does not get under the engine casing, it is better to seal the holes of the latter with adhesive tape.
