Widely known in narrow circles

Slutsky B.A.
Slutsky B.A.

Phraseologism: Widely known in narrow circles.

Meaning: About local glory.

Origin: The first line of the poem with the same title (1961) by the Soviet poet Boris Abramovich Slutsky (1919-1986). According to some reports, this ironic phrase was in the dossier that the NKVD opened on B. A. Slutsky in the 1940s.

Random phraseology:

I take my good where I find it.

Meaning:

About a man prone to stealing.

Origin:

According to the French writer J. Grimaret in his book "The Life of Moliere" (1705), these words were spoken by the French playwright Jean Baptiste Moliere (pseudonym of J. B. Poquelin, 1622-1673) in response to accusations of plagiarism. The reason for this was the phrase from the comedy of another author, sounded in Molière's comedy "The Tricks of Scapin" (1671), from the play "The Ridiculed Pedant" (act. 2, yavl. 4) by Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1665). But if this author left her unnoticed by the public, then thanks to Moliere's play she became winged, and not only in French. This phrase is now known in the form: "What the hell brought me to this galley!" J. Grimare claims that the author is Moliere, who at one time uttered this phrase in the presence of Cyrano de Bergerac, and the latter, having abused the trust of his fellow writer, used it in his play. Therefore, according to J. Grimare, Molière had every right to a replica invented by him, and he had every reason to comment: "I take my good where I find it."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. The lightest paint ever developed 04.04.2023

Canadian scientists have developed the world's lightest paint, which weighs just 2,5 nanograms per square centimeter and can cover a surface the size of a Boeing 747 with about 3 kilograms of paint. This innovative product has potential applications in a variety of industries, including aerospace, where it could help reduce aircraft weight and ultimately reduce fuel consumption.

The new paint was created by researchers at the University of Toronto and consists of hollow silica nanoparticles that are incredibly small and light and can scatter light in a way that reflects a particular color. The particles are suspended in a liquid that can be easily sawn into the surface.

The unique properties of this paint set it apart from traditional colors that rely on pigments to create colors. The hollow silica nanoparticles in the new paint do not absorb light, but rather reflect it, creating the desired color. This makes the paint incredibly light yet very effective.

In addition to its potential use in the aerospace industry, the new paint could also find applications in the automotive industry, where it could be used to lighten vehicles and improve their fuel efficiency. It can also be used in the construction industry to create highly reflective coatings that can help reduce the amount of energy needed to heat and cool buildings.

The development of this lightest paint in the world is a significant breakthrough in materials science and has the potential to revolutionize various industries. Its ability to reflect light while remaining incredibly light opens up a whole new range of possibilities for designers and engineers to create more energy efficient products.
