Origin: Shumannia Karelina is endemic to Central Asia, lives on dry slopes and rocky places.

Shumannia Karelina (Ferula Karelina)

Synonyms: Ferula Karelinii Bge., F. peusedanifolia Kar. et Kir., Schumannia turcomanica Ktze.

Perennial. The root is long, goes deep into the ground and has one or more tuberous thickenings 1-5 cm long and 0,6-2 cm wide.

Stem solitary, glabrous, bluish in color, up to 60 cm in height.

Basal leaves on long petioles, gradually turning into a long sheath. The leaf blade is glabrous, obliquely triangular or broadly ovate, 6-40 cm long and 6-30 cm wide, twice or thrice tripinnate, with linear acute terminal lobes.

Umbrellas 5-15 rays; the rays are almost the same in length, they have white stripes on the petioles and leaf lobes. Umbrellas are very small, 4-7 mm in diameter, with almost sessile flowers crowded into a head. Petals greenish or greenish-violet, hairy on the back.

Fruits are broadly ovoid, 10-15 mm long and 7-8 mm wide, densely pubescent.

It grows wild in the deserts of Central Asia. Tuberous thickening of the roots are eaten.

New pill replaces daily medication 20.11.2016

A group of scientists from MIT and Brigham Hospital has developed a unique technology that, instead of taking medications every day at a fixed time, it will be enough to swallow just one pill that will do all the work for you.

People with chronic conditions such as asthma or heart disease often need to take medication on a daily basis. But this simple, in essence, procedure is a big problem for many. In fact, less than 50% of people actually take their medication regularly and on time. But researchers at MIT and Brigham Hospital (BWH) in Boston came up with an ingenious solution: they created a single pill that, once swallowed, provides the body with the required doses of the drug for an extended period of time.

The new device, which has so far only been tested in pigs, could not only be a potential solution to the problem of patients with chronic diseases, but also a very effective way to treat diseases that are widespread in Third World countries and require long-term therapy, such as malaria.

To be effective, new pills have to overcome a number of serious obstacles. As you know, the stomach is equipped with strong muscles that push all the contents into the small intestine, so it is not easy for a pill to stay in place. To address this issue, the team of scientists endowed the drug with a special design, so that when ingested, the capsule opens into a kind of star that simply cannot crawl into the intestines. A special polymer coating ensures that pre-calibrated doses of the drug are consistently released and enter the body at a certain interval. As soon as the capsule becomes empty, it finally disintegrates and is excreted from the body naturally.

According to Giovanni Traverso, lead author of the study and a gastrointerologist specializing in biomedical engineering, this type of therapy can be beneficial in cases of high blood pressure and diabetes, the symptoms of which do not appear with a regular frequency, and therefore a person can simply forget about taking medications in the daily hustle and bustle. . Currently, there are already drugs on the market that have a prolonged action, but even these are excreted from the stomach by the end of the day. For truly long-term treatment, doctors and patients must continue to turn to patches, implants, and intravenous medications.

The project was funded in part by the Bill Gates Foundation, as part of a global campaign to rid the Third World population of malaria. Initially, the researchers focused on using an antiparasitic drug called ivermectin, which, if taken long-term, significantly reduces the risk of the disease. During tests on pigs, scientists were able to isolate the drug in small doses for as long as 10 days. The technology, of course, is still far from being usable in the commercial market, but still ahead. The next step will be a series of final tests in pigs, after which the team of scientists will be able to come to grips with human trials of the therapy.
