Catherine II

Phraseologism: Jester Balakirev.

Meaning: Cheerful, joker, the soul of the company.

Origin: Ivan Alexandrovich Balakirev (1699-1763) - a trusted servant of Emperor Peter I and his wife Catherine I, later court jester of Empress Anna Ioannovna. He enjoyed the fame of a great wit and joker. His name became popular after the book "Collection of Balakirev's Anecdotes" was published in 1830, which then went through more than 70 editions. The book was a collection of witticisms and funny stories from different European countries, but attributed to Balakirev. Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Named the cause of concussion 30.03.2018

Head injuries cause different areas of the brain to vibrate at different frequencies, which damage brain tissue.

Everyone knows that a strong blow to the head causes a concussion. It is believed that the immediate cause of the concussion is the collision of the brain itself with the skull, and this seems quite obvious.

However, in fact, a concussion can be obtained not only in a direct collision with some object, but also, for example, with a strong and sharp turn of the head. Finally, doctors know that damage to the skull injuries appear not only on the surface, but also in the depths of the brain; for example, a concussion can damage the corpus callosum, a plexus of nerve fibers that connects the left and right hemispheres.

In a word, the concussion mechanism is actually more complicated than it seems at first glance, and scientists from Stanford decided to look into it in more detail.

To do this, several dozen American football players were equipped with accelerometers and gyroscopes, which were attached to mouthguards - special devices made of flexible plastic worn over the teeth to protect them from sports injuries. Players in the game constantly collide with each other, and 189 such collisions were recorded (of which two ended in a real concussion). The information that was collected from accelerometers and gyroscopes was analyzed along with data on the state of damaged brain tissues, collected mainly from the dead.

Each strong blow to the head causes the brain to vibrate at different frequencies; vibrations with a frequency of 30 hertz are the strongest. The impact energy is absorbed by such micro-movements that last only a fraction of a second.

However, the stronger the blow, the more different vibrational frequencies occur in the brain, and damage occurs precisely because the brain areas that are nearby vibrate at different frequencies. For example, if a blow were strong enough to make a person unconscious, the corpus callosum in his brain would shake more frequently than that around him. Although the stretching and contraction of the brain tissue, shaking out of unison, lasts a very, very short time, it is still enough to cause trouble for the brain.
