Lobed cyclantera (Shinus cyclantera, Achohcha cucumber, Peruvian cucumber)

It comes from Mexico and Central America, among the Spaniards of South America it is called Repino de Comer.

This is an annual plant, with long clinging stems, therefore it is cultivated mainly on trellises or poles. Its leaves are lobed, somewhat similar to chestnut leaves; flowers unisexual, yellowish.

The fruits are fleshy, oval, tapering at both ends, 5-7 cm long and 2-3 cm wide, green at first, becoming yellowish-white at full ripeness.

This plant is known mainly as an ornamental. However, there is a variety called C. edulis Naud, with larger fruits resembling those of a gherkin; common in culture in Peru, hence the Russian name "Peruvian cucumber". The fruits contain 10 seeds.

The fruits are eaten in an unripe state, when they have not yet reached half of their final size.

To taste, the fruits of cyclantera resemble pepper and cucumber at the same time. Its seeds can be sown directly in open ground in mid-April - early May in a sheltered, sunny place, in loose nutritious soil.

Potted seedlings of this plant can also be planted in open ground along with a clod of earth or with pots (if they are peat-humus or paper) at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other.

To obtain seeds, ripened yellowed fruits are collected, they are allowed to lie for some time, and then the seeds are removed from them. Seeds must be properly dried, as, indeed, any other vegetable seeds.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Two-stage current sensors 16.07.2007

Texas Instruments introduced two current sensors with a common-mode input voltage range of -16V to 80V. The INA270 and INA271 have a two-stage architecture and are designed for applications where input signal filtering is required.

To solve the problems encountered when measuring low shunt voltage drops in the presence of high common mode voltage, filter circuits can be inserted between the INA270 and INA271 stages to maintain a buffered output voltage. As a result, when driving ADCs or low-impedance loads, no additional amplifiers are required. The range of common-mode voltages at the input of INA270 and INA271 is from -16 V (reverse voltage of a car battery) to voltages during short-term overloads of +80 V. At the same time, the range of supply voltages for devices from a single source is from +2,7 to +18 V.

The devices are distinguished by high accuracy (maximum error no more than 3% over the entire temperature range), wide bandwidth (130 kHz), low quiescent current (maximum 900 μA) and an extended temperature range of -40...125°C. The available gains are 14 for the INA270 and 20 for the INA271. Both devices can also be used in telecommunications equipment, laptop computers, soldering stations, measuring and testing systems.
