Quantum dot in gold

26.09.2009

Quantum dots are capable of fluorescence, that is, they glow when exposed to visible light. Gold nanoparticles glow when exposed to infrared light. Both types of these particles are used by biologists for diagnostics, and gold particles are also used for treatment, since when irradiated with microwaves, they heat the cell in which they find themselves.

Scientists from the University of Washington, led by Gao Xiaohu, came up with a technique that allows you to combine these particles into one. In accordance with it, a quantum dot is covered with a polymer layer, by changing the structure of which it is possible to set the shell thickness with an accuracy of one nanometer. Gold ions were deposited onto the polymer and a gold shell 2–3 nm thick was obtained.

From above everything was covered with polyhistidines. In the resulting particle with a diameter of 15–20 nm, the quantum dot regularly shone, and its light passed through a thin golden shell.

Since gold is not poisonous and is approved for use, many proteins can be attached to it, and the new system will be a good addition to existing nanomedicine tools.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Micro-bots inside the human eye 13.11.2018

German scientists from the Max Planck Institute have created the so-called micro-propellers (micropropellors) or micro-bots. These tiny tadpole-like objects are 200 times smaller than the width of a human hair. The micro-bots can be controlled by magnets and used to inject medication directly into the spot in the eye where it is needed.

The scientists tested the micro-bots on eyeballs taken from dead pigs at a slaughterhouse (pig eyes are very similar to human eyes). Using a syringe, 10 miniature objects were immediately launched into the eyeball, and then in just 30 minutes, using a magnetic field, they were delivered from the retina to the back of the eye. This proved to be much faster and more effective than injecting drugs into the eye using eye drops or injections.

Each micro-bot is made of nickel with magnetic materials added, and their surface is made very slippery for ease of movement. In practice, their heads would be filled or coated with a drug to treat glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or other eye conditions. As a rule, for the treatment of these diseases, the medicine in the form of eye drops covers the entire surface of the pupil, and enters the back wall of the eye much later than micro-bots do.

Due to their miniature size and slippery coating, micro-bots can easily pass through the vitreous body, which is a thick gel-like substance that makes up 80% of the eye.
