Stamping of thin-walled body shells. Tips for a modeller

Working on the bodywork of replica racing cars has never been easy. Athletes have developed many technologies using foam plastics, plastics, paper, cardboard and fiberglass stickers. However, each of them has some disadvantages. This may be an increased complexity and laboriousness of the process, or unsatisfactory strength and weight characteristics of the finished product.

The proposed method, which uses the vacuum drawing of a plastic film after its heating, makes it possible to “stamp” bodies in a matter of minutes after completion of not too laborious work on the preparation of fixtures. In addition, due to the selection of the initial material (film), it is possible to simultaneously solve most of the strength-weight problems that arise when creating a highway model.

The idea of vacuum drawing is not new, but it is practically not used by modellers. But in vain! It is enough to see the result obtained with this method once, as it becomes clear - this cannot be achieved with any other. The quality of reproduction of the shape of a film body completely depends on the quality of manufacture of the original body model (if a ready-made micromachine, factory-made or self-made is not used!), And the gain in weight compared to an equal-strength cardboard version is ninefold!

Stamping of thin-walled body shells
Device for vacuum stamping: 1 - elements of the finished screw clamp, 2 - frames (wood), 3 - seals (frames made of sheet microporous rubber), 4 - sheet blank, 5 - walls of the vacuum chamber (sheet steel 5 mm thick), 6 - spacer (plywood 10 mm), 7 - stand (steel, brass), 8 - leg, 9 - fitting (bicycle), 10 - M5x20 screws (30 pcs.).

The device for vacuum forming itself does not require special explanations. It should only be noted that the vacuum chamber is hermetically connected to the base, with all seams being smeared with glue of the Moment type. And wooden frames assembled from suitable bars or parts from worn-out chessboards are pasted over on the same binder with sheet microporous rubber (one frame on both sides, the second on only one). The heating of the film, in contrast to the method using photolamps of kilowatt power, is carried out with hot water, which gives an additional benefit: overheating to the point of brittleness of thin plastic is eliminated, the operation is simplified, and work safety is increased. To create a vacuum, you can use a school vacuum pump or any compressor, to the suction channel of which the hose of the forming device is connected.

Stamping of thin-walled body shells
The sequence of stamping operations (click to enlarge): I - preliminary reverse stamping for the formation of a "bath" from the workpiece film, II - turning the workpiece and assembling the device for the main stamping, III - main stamping (for example, a body for a track car).

The sequence of operations is shown in the figures. The first stage (reverse stamping) allows you to simultaneously check the reliability of the entire system as a whole and the ability to deform the selected film sample. The formation of an intermediate hood ("bath") makes it possible not only to use higher body models, but also improves the main process of shaping, reduces the likelihood of wrinkles and tears. In case of unsuccessful samples, sheet blanks can be used again by straightening them in a flat metal cuvette by heating with hot water.

If it is not possible to use a finished body sample as a stamping model, the latter is made from soft wood (linden, aspen). After the end of processing, it is covered successively with 3-4 layers of parquet varnish and then polished. Before vacuuming, it is useful to lubricate the surface of the model with machine oil to improve the molding process and simplify the removal of the stamped film.

It should be noted that the bodies for highway vehicles are by no means all that the proposed vacuum "press" can be made. Household items, parts of ship and car models, up to the largest ones, design elements of radio equipment and much more - this is the range of possibilities of such a technology.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Fertilizers and fish 03.02.2010

In the Mediterranean Sea, stocks of commercial fish species are falling. Only off the coast of Egypt, the fish became larger and more numerous. Studies have shown that the reason is in the Aswan power plant, built in 1955 with the help of the Soviet Union.

After the creation of the reservoir, the Nile floods stopped, which for centuries and millennia brought fruitful silt to the fields. Local farmers had to apply more fertilizer (up to 900 kg of nitrogen fertilizer per hectare). Water flowing from the fields carried fertilizer to the Nile, and from there to the sea. In addition, the population has grown, and sewage is often dumped into the river or directly into the sea without treatment.

As a result, phytoplankton flourished off the coast of Egypt, followed by microalgae-eating zooplankton and plankton-eating fish. Catches compared with 1955 increased three times.
