Focus Description:

The cabinet in question is only 10 cm high and 6,5 cm wide and thick. It consists of two parts: an external frame, covered from above, but open through, and a box, which occupies one third of its internal space.

Focus secret:

When the drawer is taken out, the cabinet, which does not actually have a bottom, seems simple and uncomplicated. But on closer inspection, you can see a small copper pin 0,5 cm long, located on the back plate of the cabinet, directly flush with the bottom of the drawer when it is in place.

The box can also be shown to the audience, it seems so simple and thin that all suspicions about the existence of any hidden space will be destroyed.

This box is covered both inside and outside with black cloth. There is a tiny hole in the locker, the position of which matches the aforementioned copper pin.

If a pin is inserted into this hole, the pressure of the pin releases a tiny latch and allows the bottom of the box, which is essentially held only by this latch at the back and the cloth loop at the front, to be in the position indicated in the figure.

This is what happens when the drawer is placed in its place in the locker and closed properly. The pressure of the copper pin releases the latch and the bottom of the drawer drops and allows every small thing placed in the drawer to fall into the hand of the person holding the locker.

Pulling out the box again, the magician thereby returns the bottom to its original place, where it is held by a latch until the copper pin releases it.

The main advantage of this little device is that it is not difficult to make and that its secret can only be revealed if we begin to look at the bottom of the cabinet at the moment when the box is inserted, and this can be easily prevented by giving the audience each part separately for inspection.

The magician begins by showing first the cabinet and then the drawer. Putting the locker on his palm, he invites someone from the audience to put some trinket; a coin, ring or watch, etc. in a box and put the box in the box.

As soon as the box is locked, the item falls into the magician's hand. Grabbing the stand with the other hand (lifting it only by the top and with the tips of his fingers in order to deflect any suspicion of deceit from himself), he places it on the table.

Having taken possession of the thing thus occupied, he completes the trick by making it reappear.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

DC-DC Converter EL7566 15.02.2003

The new DC-DC converter EL7566 from INTERSIL has an operating current of up to 6 A and an efficiency of up to 96%. It works with input voltages from 3V to 6V, and its output voltage can be adjusted from 0,8V almost to the input voltage.

The high clock frequency (1 MHz) allows the use of small components, so the converter, made in a 28-pin HTSSOP package, occupies only 5 cm2. The microcircuit has protection against overheating, soft start.
