What is the longest bike in the world?

One of the fruits of the creative flight of thought of the designers was the world's longest tandem bike. Its length was 20,4 meters, and it easily fit 35 cyclists.

The design was made by the Belgian company Pedalstompers. On April 20, 1979, this miracle set off on its first journey. True, the bike drove only 60 meters, after which, with screams and a terrible roar, all thirty-five participants in the grand race fell to the asphalt. The lack of coordination of the team affected. By the way, it is impossible to lift this tandem alone, since it weighs 1100 kilograms.

New Zealander Terry Tesman was more fortunate. He built a bicycle 22,24 meters long, which weighed 340 kilograms. His offspring overcame February 27, 1988 as much as 246 meters: after all, he weighed less and managed much better.

Why do gene disorders appear only in males?

The hereditary information of an organism is contained in the chromosomes of its cells. Chromosomes are carriers of genes located in them (in a linear order). Each species of organisms has a unique and constant chromosome set. In somatic (non-sex) cells of higher plants and animals, the chromosome of each type is represented in a double number; a cell with two complete sets of chromosomes is called diploid.

Spermatozoa and eggs, in which each chromosome is represented only in the singular, are called haploid cells. The number of chromosomes in them is half that in somatic cells of the same organism. When an egg is fertilized by a sperm, the two haploid sets of chromosomes are combined, and thus their diploid number is restored.

About a century ago, one of the founders of genetics, Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866-1945) and his collaborators studied the mechanism of sex inheritance in Drosophila. They were able to find that the paired chromosomes of the females perfectly match each other, so all their eggs, receiving a chromosome from each pair, are identical. In males, in one of the four pairs, one of the chromosomes was normal (X-chromosome), and the other was shortened (Y-chromosome). This means that during the formation of spermatozoa, half of them receive the X chromosome, and the other half - the Y chromosome.

If a violation occurs in one of the female's genes located on the X chromosome, the paired gene corrects the situation. In males, this does not always happen, since the Y chromosome paired with the X chromosome contains much fewer genes. Therefore, gene disorders appear only in males.

Large scale gravitational accumulator built 04.08.2023

Switzerland's Energy Vault has announced the completion and commissioning of the world's first commercial gravitational energy storage. This unique battery was built in China and has a capacity of 25 MW and a capacity of 100 MWh. Its principle of operation is to convert electrical energy into kinetic energy by lifting concrete blocks to a height and releasing this energy as they descend to the ground.

This gravitational energy accumulator, built in China, is the first facility of this scale and commercial purpose. Energy Vault previously built a 5MW demonstration battery in Switzerland, but a new project in China surpasses it. In addition, China has already expressed interest in building five more similar gravity batteries with a total capacity of 2 GWh.

The principle of operation of gravitational accumulators resembles pumped storage power plants, but without complex pumps and technological equipment. Blocks, weighing up to 24 tons, rise to a height of up to 100 meters and descend back to the ground to release the accumulated energy. It is an efficient buffer for storing energy derived from renewable sources such as solar and wind power.

The efficiency of the Energy Vault gravity system starts at 75% and can reach 80% and higher. The storage of energy, that is, the lifting of blocks, can last from 2 to 12 hours, depending on the specific tasks and available energy sources. The commissioned system in Jiangsu Province, near Shanghai, will operate for 4 hours. Connection to the power transmission network is planned for the fourth quarter of this year. The project impressed the local authorities so much that another similar battery was ordered.
