Each one is the blacksmith of his own destiny

Ancient Rome
Ancient Rome

Phraseologism: Everyone is the blacksmith of his own destiny.

Meaning: A person himself is responsible for how his life will turn out, for his troubles and achievements, his fate.

Origin: From Latin: Faber est suae quisque fortunae. According to the Roman historian Sallust (86-35 BC), the author of this expression is the Roman consul and poet Appius Claudius, who compiled a collection of his maxims in verse (307 BC).

Random phraseology:

Call heaven and earth to witness.

Meaning:

About an attempt to convince someone of something, which is accompanied by all sorts of redundant (and therefore suspicious, unconvincing) oaths.

Origin:

The original source is the Bible. The Gospel of Matthew contains Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, in which he speaks of the sin of all kinds of oaths (ch. 5, vv. 34-35): the earth, because it is His footstool, nor Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
