Cato
Mark Portius Cato Sr.
Phraseologism: Cato.
Meaning: A common noun for an honest person who steadily upholds the laws of honor and morality (jokingly).
Origin: The ancient Roman commander, orator, writer and statesman Cato Mark Porcius the Elder (234-149 BC), according to the ancient Greek historian Plutarch (c. 45-c. 127), was distinguished by intransigence and honesty, because of which he amassed many enemies. Pliny the Elder (23-79) tells that Cato was brought to trial 44 times, but was never convicted. Usually the name of Cato is mentioned in connection with his famous phrase, which has become a catch phrase.

Origin:
The primary source is the life of one of the monks of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra named Isaac. This life tells of how one day demons came to this hermit monk, who lived in a separate cave, in the form of beautiful young men and said: "Isaac, we are angels, but Christ is coming to you, come and bow to him." Isaac allowed himself to be deceived and bowed to the demon as to Christ. Then all this evil spirit exclaimed: "Our Isaac!" And the demon, posing as Christ, forced Isaac to dance to the demonic snot, tambourines and harp. In the end, exhausted by this dance, the hermit fell unconscious (see: Paterik of the Kiev Caves Monastery. St. Petersburg, 1911). The expression (as a rule, in the colloquial version "Isakiy") was popular in Russian speech of the XNUMXth - early XNUMXth centuries. In A.N. Ostrovsky's play "Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man," Golutvin says to Glumov: "Look how he pretends, and also, after all, our brother Isaac." Glumov replies: "I'm not your brother, and not Isakiy." The piezoelectric effect in a polymer is ten times greater than in the best ceramics.
“Together with colleagues from the Technical University of Aachen, we conducted a fundamental study of the properties of polymers,” says Folker Urban from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy, “and at first they did not pay attention to the fact that one of the polymers reacts to an electric field. But then they took a closer look and found that this is a real piezoelectric effect, and a huge one - ten times stronger than that of crystals or ceramics. But until now it was believed that such an effect does not occur in non-polar polymers.
As detailed examination showed, it was a disopolymer, namely poly(styrene-b-isoprene). In this material, there is a balance between the repulsion of different parts of the polymer and the elasticity of rubber. The electric field turned out to be the third force that shifts the balance and reversibly changes the size of the product made of this material.
The discovery of such a strong effect in a polymer opens up broad new prospects for the creation of all kinds of electromechanical drives, mechanical generators, and energy storage devices.
