In 52 BC. e. Julius Caesar's troops laid siege to the city of Alesia, where an army of Gauls rebelling against Roman rule took refuge under the command of Vercingetorix. Caesar counted on a long siege and, foreseeing the threat of Gaulish reinforcements, ordered the construction of another wall around the entire perimeter at some distance from the city walls of Alesia. In a decisive battle, the Gauls attacked the Romans located between the two walls from both sides, but failed, and shortly thereafter Gaul finally submitted to Rome.

What is completeness?

Today, everyone watches their weight. Many people follow a diet. Completeness is something no one wants for themselves. Although to a certain extent completeness is very necessary for the body. This is due to the fact that connective tissue cells accumulate fat.

First, small droplets appear inside the cells. They increase in size, gather together in a large drop, finally fill the cell and inflate it like a bubble. The usual daily food of the body is glucose, which is very well absorbed. The process of processing fat is more complex. But fat gives off more heat than the same amount of glucose. Indeed, fat releases 2 times more energy than glucose. Therefore, despite the complexity of processing, fat is most convenient as a reserve accumulated in the body. If we consume less nutrients than the body needs, then the consumption of fat reserves begins.

Fat is also necessary because it is a protective material. It acts like a water cushion. Due to its elasticity, fat is difficult to compress. This "water cushion" of fat is at the base of the buttocks, so we can sit comfortably, under the arches of the feet, under the skin of the palms, on the cheeks and in the pad for the eyeballs. The third use of fat in the body is as an insulating material that protects the body from heat loss.

Solar panel on glass 24.10.2006

German scientists are going to make cheap solar cells by growing silicon on glass.

Scientists from the Institute for Crystal Growth (Germany), led by Dr. Thorsten Boeck, together with the company "BP Solar" have begun a three-year project to grow thin films of polycrystalline silicon with large grains on glass.

The essence of the idea is this. Now substrates for solar cells are made by cutting single crystals of silicon into wafers 0,45 mm thick. A photon penetrates the solar battery to a depth of only 0,02 mm.

It turns out that a huge amount of ultra-pure silicon is wasted: a thin single-crystal film would do the job of converting light into electricity no worse than a thick plate. Accordingly, the price would be much lower. Alas, thin silicon films do not grow as single crystals. On the contrary, they consist of small grains, which significantly reduces the efficiency of the battery.

To increase the size of silicon grains grown on a glass (silicon oxide!) plate, German scientists proposed a two-stage process. First, they create a grid of silicon nuclei on the glass surface with a step of 0 mm. Then these embryos are turned into full-fledged grains.

The result is a continuous polycrystalline pure silicon film 0,05 mm thick. It should also serve as the basis for cheap solar panels.
