Focus Description:

The performer declares that he can transfer his art to any of the spectators who wish to follow him or together with him to show the trick. The assistant brings out a table on which there is a tray with a jug full of water and two small cups turned upside down. A person who wants to do the trick with the illusionist comes out of the auditorium. The magician gives one glass, and the second takes for himself. The assistant fills both cups with water to the top and gives each a small piece of paper.

The performer invites the viewer to repeat all the movements that he will do. Here the magician covers a glass of water with paper and recommends pressing it harder and more tightly to the vessel; the spectator follows all his advice. The magician turns the glass upside down, and the water does not spill out of it. "Try and you do it!" he says. The viewer turns the glass upside down: "Done?" - says the magician. - "That's not all. So everyone can do it. Let's continue further! See?" - with these words, he slowly removes a piece of paper from the glass (Fig. 107). The viewer also takes off the paper, but it turns out to be embarrassing: water from the glass is poured onto the floor.

“Nothing,” the performer consoles, “failures can be in any business, and even more so in illusions. Do not despair! Come home, repeat the trick two hundred to three hundred times, and learn how to perform it well!” Then the magician, turning the glass upside down, pours water from it into a jug and gives the glass to the audience for inspection.

Focus secret:

To prevent water from spilling out of an inverted glass, it is enough to firmly press a piece of paper to its edges. At the same time, there should be no air bubbles inside the glass of water. If this happens, you will have to fill the glass with water again "top". To prevent water from spilling out even after the paper is removed from the glass, it is necessary to make a circle of transparent plexiglass or celluloid 2 mm thick and with a diameter equal to the outer edges of the glass. Carefully work the edges of the vessel on a sheet of fine emery cloth. The edges of the circle should be removed 1 mm in thickness and 1-2 mm in width. The strip formed around the circle is also processed on an emery cloth.

On fig. 108, B shows a circle from above, and in fig. 108, B - on the side. Now, if we attach a circle to a glass filled to the brim with water and squeeze out excess water, then the circle will enter the vessel so firmly that it cannot fall off, and the resulting rim will not allow the circle to slide. There is nothing to fear that when the glass is turned over, water will pour out of it.

It is clear that putting the mug on the glass must be done by the magician imperceptibly to everyone, and especially to the spectator who has stepped onto the stage.

A circle is put on under the cover of the palm; it should be driven from the side along the edges of the glass. When the vessel is completely covered, then at this moment they lightly press on the circle, which with its edge will tightly enter the glass, displacing excess water from it. The paper must be moistened with water before being applied to the glass. The viewer will accurately reproduce all your movements, so remove the paper from the glass, moving it away from you at arm's length, otherwise your volunteer assistant will pour all the water on himself. To prevent this from happening, the assistant needs to follow the viewer and at the right time suggest what to do.

In the finale, the illusionist, turning his glass upside down, imperceptibly, also under the cover of his palm, removes the circle from it and, hiding it, pours water from the glass into a jug.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Transmitting antennae the size of a fingernail 17.04.2015

The dimensions of transmitting antennas directly affect their performance and capabilities. This imposes certain restrictions on developments in the field of electronics. But everything can change.

Scientists from the University of Cambridge have discovered that electromagnetic waves can be generated not only in the classical way - by converting the energy of electromagnetic waves using an antenna. A similar result can be achieved by using the "symmetry breaking" effect of the field caused by the motion of charged particles. This discovery could lead to tiny antennas and possibly a whole new generation of smartphone design in the future.

By using thin films of a piezoelectric material that responds to the application of a voltage, the researchers found that at certain frequencies they can act as antennas. To transfer energy in this case, it is necessary to break the symmetry of the field and accelerate the electrons.

The results of the research can contribute to understanding how electromagnetism and quantum mechanics intersect and interact.
