What practical application did figurines originally have on car radiators?

In early cars, the radiator cap was opened separately from the hood, and by its heating it was possible to judge the temperature of the coolant. The Boyce MotoMeter took out a patent and began installing thermometers on radiator caps that were visible to drivers. Car manufacturers saw them as an additional branding element - over time, the need for sensors disappeared, and stylized figures took root on the hoods of many models. Later, statistics were collected that the figurines increase the amount of damage to pedestrians in collisions. Some manufacturers, such as Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz, have not abandoned their placement, but have provided mechanisms that fold or pull the figures inward on a sharp blow.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How many eyes does an eyeless big-eyed spider have?

a) No eyes.
b) There are no eyes, but they are large.
c) One big eye that doesn't work.
d) 144 eye-like warts.

He has no eyes.

The blind arachnid was first discovered in 1973, and the entire population lives in three impenetrable caves on the volcanic island of Kauai, which is part of the Hawaiian archipelago.

As is often the case with cave dwellers, the spider evolved without the need for vision, however, being a representative of the big-eyed spider family, it simply must be called "big-eyed" (that is, if its eyes did cut through, they would certainly be large).

Adults are comparable in size to a fifty pence coin. A friend-neighbor and at the same time the main food source of the eyeless big-eyed spider is the Kauai cave amphipod: a small crustacean resembling a blind translucent shrimp.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Code Composer Studio - Platinum Edition 27.03.2007

CCStudio Platinum is a single integrated development, debugging and testing environment for all processors manufactured by Texas Instruments.

The Platinum version of CCStudio includes support for TI's newest dual-core DaVinci processors and TMS320C64x+ DSPs, as well as a Component Manager that allows developers to easily install and try out a new compiler or DSP/BIOS core before migrating an entire project to it. The real-time DSP/BIOS core is used as the basis for software developed for TI processor-based DSP systems.

Among the new kernel features is a power management API library that gives developers the ability to programmatically influence the voltage and frequency of the processor, turn off external devices, and perform other actions to reduce power consumption. Power management support is currently being rolled out to the TMS320C55x processors and will be rolled out to other platforms in the future. The kernel also includes a message queuing library (MSGQ) that implements communication between processors.

Programs can now use the same API to communicate between tasks, whether they run on the same processor or different ones. This simplifies application development and gives programmers more options for parallel computing. Finally, the new core also supports specific features provided by the TMS320C64X+ processor.
