When was the computer built?

What is a computer? An automatic computer can work on its own for hours, or even days, performing millions and millions of operations in solving a problem. A computer is able to solve problems that may involve thousands of pieces of information. This information can be numbers expressed in numbers, words made up of letters, and combinations of numbers, letters, or other characters. Such information is called a machine word.

The computer then adds, multiplies, sorts, compares, or does any of hundreds of other calculations or reasoning. The computer does all this in terms of machine words, following a long list of instructions called a program. Instructions from the program are entered into the computer by a person. The computer analyzes all this in detail and finally solves the problem, after which it prints the answer encoded in computer forms. Computers usually don't have moving parts: work is done by a stream of electrons or electrical particles.

The first working automatic computer was made in 1944 at Harvard University by Professor Howard Aiken and a group of engineers from the International Business Machines Corporation. They named their device "Harvard IBM-1". It was the first machine that could perform a long list of computational operations. She could work with 23-bit numbers - add two such numbers in 0,3 seconds and multiply them in 4 seconds. The machine used electrical and mechanical rather than electronic parts. As soon as electronic parts began to be used, the speed of the computer increased dramatically.

Now the most powerful electronic computers can perform several million arithmetic operations per second and store a huge amount of information.

Why do people stutter?

The most complex and demanding musical instrument imaginable is probably the human vocal apparatus. It includes the abdomen, chest, larynx, mouth, nose, tongue, palate, lips, teeth. The most important when reproducing sounds are the muscles of the mouth, palate, lips, and tongue. The only reason why we can play this musical instrument so well is because we learned it in early childhood. If we cannot play this musical instrument perfectly, then our speech becomes incorrect and defects appear in it. One of these defects is stuttering.

Stuttering is the result of a spasm in one or more of the organs involved in speech production. The flow of words is suddenly interrupted. There is a pause. Sometimes this happens as a result of quickly repeating the sound in a row, on which we originally stopped. There are many degrees of stuttering. This can be either a slight inability to pronounce the final letters or syllables, or a situation where the spasm completely fetters the muscles of the tongue and larynx.

Stuttering rarely appears before 4-5 years of age. A child may begin to stutter if something has happened to one of his sound-producing organs. Very often, the cause of stuttering is emotional excitement. A stuttering person is usually most troubled by explosive consonants: "b", "p", "d", "t", "k", solid "g". These consonants are formed as a result of stopping the movement of air and pressure on the lips, followed by a sudden explosion of the air flow and its exit through the open lips.

Try it yourself: say the sound "b". Really explosive. Stuttering is often corrected if a person follows the rules of reading and slowly, carefully pronounces each syllable. Of course, if stuttering is based on an emotional disturbance, then a doctor's advice and a special course of treatment are needed.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

graphene masks 19.09.2020

A team of chemical and material engineering specialists from the University of Hong Kong presented the results of their truly extraordinary research on the development of lighter, better and more effective antibacterial masks against bacteria of various kinds. In particular, today it became known that a team of specialists managed to present not just a new format of masks as such, but a conceptually new technical basis for their development, and we are talking about the use of graphene as a basis that gets rid of bacteria. Given all the previous research, it becomes clear that they will succeed.

Early research on the use of graphene as a basis for killing most of the known harmful bacteria showed that the material actually has such properties only if it is obtained as a thin layer on a polyamide film, by applying carbon dioxide to it, with assisted by an infrared laser system. It is this approach that makes it possible to achieve not only a sufficiently dense layer of graphene on the surface of a polyamide film, but also to make it as resistant as possible to the absolute majority of bacteria.

Thus, by optimizing this process, specialists from Hong Kong were able to create a new approach to the production of antibacterial masks with graphene as the main antibacterial component, and conduct appropriate tests - it turned out that the presence of graphene is an ideal condition for getting rid of the vast majority of harmful bacteria, even for a long time. time after using the mask.

On the other hand, scientists talk about the need to deal with the optimization of the process of creating graphene masks based on more compact and easily accessible materials as accurately and correctly as possible, but for such an approach, it is necessary to take seriously the optimization of the process as such. Thus, it remains only to wait for the end of the current stage of development and the first detailed plans of specialists to present a universal system for the development of graphene masks.
