How long do animals live?

Long-lived species are found at different stages of the evolutionary development of animals.

Of multicellular animals, sponges live up to 10-15 years, coelenterates in some cases up to 70-80 years (anemones), representatives of various groups of worms from 1-3 to several decades, spiders 4-5, sometimes up to 20 years (female tarantulas) , crustaceans - from a few weeks (daphnia) to 50 years (lobsters).

Insects in the imago stage (characterized by the full development of wings and the presence of sexual appendages at the end of the abdomen) usually do not live long, but some are homoptera up to 40-60 years.

The life expectancy of laminabranch mollusks is up to 100 years, however, many species of mollusks live for several months or even weeks.

From vertebrates: sturgeons live up to 50-100 years, giant salamander - over 50 years, toads and newts - up to 25-30 years, frogs - up to 12-13 years, crocodiles and turtles live up to 50-150 years.

From birds: eagle owls, crows, golden eagles, white pelican, parrots live up to 50-70 years, gulls, cranes, condor, African ostrich - up to 30-40 years.

Some mammals - up to 70-110 years. The maximum life expectancy within a class usually differs by several dozen times, and within a detachment by several times. So, in mammals, small rodents (mice, rats) live up to 3-4 years, predators (cat, leopard, lion, dog, wolf) - up to 25-30 years, artiodactyls (pig, sheep, cow, deer, elk) - up to 15-30 years, equine (donkey, zebra, horse, elephant) - up to 30-70 years, monkeys (orangutans, chimpanzees) - up to 25-45 years. The record holder for longevity among mammals is the bowhead whale, whose life expectancy can reach 150 years.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why did the Japanese use nightingale floors?

In Japanese castles and temples, in order to make it difficult for a stranger to sneak in unnoticed, so-called "nightingale floors" were often installed. The floorboards were nailed to the poles with an inverted V-shaped fixing, which produced a bird-like sound when the board was under pressure. Moreover, tiptoeing only enhanced the effect, since the pressure on the floor in this case was higher than from a full foot.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

AMDVLK - open source Vulkan drivers for Linux 26.12.2017

AMD has released AMDVLK drivers for Linux. These are the first open source graphics drivers for AMD Radeon 3D cards to provide full support for the Vulkan 1.0 graphics API.

The drivers are based on the AMD Platform Abstraction Library (PAL) component, which encapsulates the specific hardware and OS features used by different AMD drivers. This allows you to provide the same experience across platforms, including support for new GPUs and development tools.

Compatible solutions include Radeon HD 3 series, Radeon HD 7000M series, Radeon™ R8000/R5/R7 9/200, Radeon RX 300/400, Radeon M500/M200/M300, Radeon RX Vega, AMD FirePro Workstation Wx400/Wx000 /Wx100, Radeon Pro WX x300 and Radeon Pro 100/400.

The drivers are compliant with the Vulkan 1.0 specification, supporting 30 Vulkan extensions, tracing for Radeon GPU Profiler, built-in debugging and profiling tools, intermediate command pre-buffer, and SR-IOV virtualization. As far as compatible operating systems are concerned, the list includes 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 16.04.3 and RedHat 7.4. The drivers are available in the AMD GPUOpen GitHub repository.
