When did the first plane fly?

Ancient myths tell of people who tried to fly. For example, Icarus, the son of Daedalus, who flew on wings made of wax and feathers. This example has been the death of many of those who for many centuries have attempted to take off, throwing themselves from a height with fragile makeshift wings strapped to their backs. Gradually, the understanding began to come that people would never be able to fly, imitating birds. Something fundamentally new was required.

As far as we know, this idea was first expressed by Roger Bacon (1214-1292): "It is possible to make propellers for flights in the middle of which a person will sit ..." balloons filled with hot air or hydrogen.

However, the big drawback of balloons was that its passengers were entirely dependent on the vagaries of the weather and constantly strayed off course. Man was still far from real flight. The first flying model of a machine that was heavier than air appeared in 1804. It was a 994 square centimeter kite with a tail. In 1848, John Stringfellow launched a monoplane powered by a steam engine along a 9-meter inclined wire. He gradually climbed up the wire until he bumped into a canvas screen.

The Russians claim that in 1882 Alexander Mozhaisky took off in a large steam-powered aircraft. In 1896, Dr. Samuel Pierpont Langley successfully flew a biplane with a wingspan of 5 meters, covering a distance of 925 meters. On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright started the homemade engine of his plane and took off.

By today's standards, the flight is not particularly impressive: he flew only thirty-six meters. But it was enough to make Orville and his brother Wilbur the first to build an airplane and fly it under control. It is believed that the first successful flight was made in 1902 by Preston Watson in a biplane equipped with a Santos-Dupont engine, but this fact has not been officially confirmed.

Where are eels born?

The most curious living creatures are long, slippery, whip-like members of the eel family.

If it were possible to follow one of the species of this fish, then it could be found either in the ocean, swimming hundreds of miles, or rising along rivers, or even crawling in the grass over land to where, as instinct tells it, there is a rich pond food. Every eel caught in America or Europe or even in rivers on the mainland comes from one of the approximately 20 million eggs laid by its mother at a depth of 180 to 275 meters in a certain area of the Atlantic Ocean near Bermuda! The common eel has a dark brown color and is covered with smooth skin, on which, as a rule, scales or not, or it is very delicate, small.

Only recently have people learned about the origin of young eels. It is now known that they originally appear as transparent creatures floating near the surface of the ocean. After a while, these creatures gradually decrease and take on the definite shape of an adult eel. Then the eels of a certain section of this breeding zone swim in the direction of Europe by the millions. But they do not enter the fresh waters of European rivers until they reach the third year of life. Eels from another part of the breeding zone swim towards America and, after reaching one year, rise along all American rivers from the St. Lawrence River to the Gulf of Mexico.

After living in fresh water from four to twelve years old and reaching an average length of 60 to 90 centimeters, they descend the rivers, never to return. Eels swim back to Bermuda, breed in the depths and die! Eels are caught as they travel down the rivers from July to late October - sometimes later - and on their way to Bermuda. The annual catch of eels along the Atlantic coast exceeds 900 kilograms.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Solar Impulse 2 completes round-the-world flight 26.07.2016

The first circumnavigation of the solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse 2 has come to an end. The device, having flown 42 thousand km in several stages, landed on July 26 in Abu Dhabi (UAE).

Solar Impulse 2 aircraft engines are powered by solar panels. In total, he has 17 thousand photocells. The device weighs like a car - about 2,3 tons, and has a Boeing 747 wing size. The cockpit is the size of a telephone booth. Swiss designer Bertrand Piccard built the first Solar Impulse aircraft in 2009, and in 2012 flew it around the world with his colleague Andre Borschberg. In March last year, pilots began a round-the-world flight on a new version of the aircraft - Solar Impulse 2. The flights are carried out to promote the idea of renewable energy.

The round-the-world flight began on March 9, 2015 in Abu Dhabi. The pilots took turns flying the aircraft. A total of 42 kilometers, landings on four continents, flights over three seas and two oceans. The longest flight was 8924 km from Nagoya in Japan to the Hawaiian Islands (USA) and lasted 118 hours - at that time Andre Borschberg broke the absolute world record for the longest continuous solo flight. In total, during the circumnavigation of the world, pilots officially broke 19 records.

Initially, Piccard and Borschberg hoped to complete the circumnavigation last year, but failed to catch good weather in the northern hemisphere in the summer. Then, when the batteries were damaged during the five-day flight, it was decided to interrupt the flights for 10 months.

The experimental design of the aircraft revealed a number of technical difficulties that made the craft sensitive to weather conditions. The flight from Cairo was very uneven, and Picard had to contend with turbulence over the hot sands of the Arabian Desert. In addition, pilots are forced to take oxygen tanks into the cockpit to breathe at high altitude, which only allows them to sleep for 20 minutes.
