How did lullabies come about?

In many countries of the world, children know hundreds of rhymes and songs that were known to their great-great-great-grandfathers. Although the word "lullaby" appeared in English only in 1824, such tunes have existed for many centuries. Lullabies have different origins. Many of them came from rituals, holidays and ceremonies many centuries ago in Europe.

Some of them are invented to explain the wonders of the world. Others repeat ancient spells, with which they tried to influence rains, storms, droughts and floods. It is said that the song "London Bridge is falling" appeared in ancient times. Such religious verses as "Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, bless the bed in which I lie" are taken from the old rites.

Some poems also trace their origins to ancient games. "Nick Knack Paddy Wack Give the Dog a Bone" came from a game that first became known in Japan. She reached Rome, from where the Roman conquering soldiers carried her throughout Europe, and she reached England. Sometimes the rhymes arose from the cries of street peddlers who offered their services in rhyme.

So, for example, "Hot peas, hot, hot, hot" was originally the cry of such a street vendor. Rhymed stories and songs were printed on long sheets of paper and sold for pennies. The poem "Three Blind Mice" was printed in 1609 and sold in this way. Some of the poems were performed by wandering actors on the streets. So, the poem "Thirty Days in September" has been used in school theaters since 1602! About half of the most famous poems are 200 years old or more.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What are brown dwarfs?

According to modern theoretical concepts, only objects with a mass exceeding the mass of Jupiter by 80 or more times become real stars. Objects with a mass less than 17 Jupiter masses are destined to become planets.

Brown dwarfs are objects with an intermediate mass between the two types described above. They are too large to be considered planets, but not large enough for thermonuclear reactions characteristic of stars to occur inside them (thermonuclear reactions can occur in their depths only with the most "light-burning" isotopes).

The existence of these barely warm, and therefore dark and difficult to distinguish objects, has only recently been experimentally proven (with the help of the Hubble Space Telescope).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Playing with dolls develops empathy 03.12.2020

Psychologists at Cardiff University (UK) conducted a study that confirmed that playing with dolls contributes to the development of empathy in children. Even if the child plays alone, he masters the skills of processing social information.

Empathy is a complex concept that includes the ability to determine the needs and desires of other people, to build one's own behavior accordingly, to interact, taking into account the interests of others, to take other points of view and resolve conflicts.

The problem of developing social skills in children came to the fore in 2020 due to forced quarantine. Since the spring of 2020, the population of most countries has been in a situation of isolation, children have lost the usual opportunity to communicate with their peers, go to kindergarten and school. In the survey already mentioned, more than 70% of parents admitted that they were concerned about how the lockdown and life "locked down" could affect younger family members and their ability to socialize. 74% of those surveyed said they were willing to encourage children to play with toys if they realized that these activities will help the child develop social and emotional skills.

Psychologists at Cardiff University have found out how the development of emotional intelligence is related to the nature of the games children play. A total of 42 children (20 boys and 22 girls) took part in the study. They were divided into four groups, and each had a different activity: playing with dolls on their own, playing with dolls with another person (research worker), playing on a tablet alone, and playing on a tablet with another person (research worker).

All the time that the children played, they were wearing special "hats" with sensors using fNIRS technology. The sensors trigger light signals that determine the level of hemoglobin flow in different parts of the brain. If the level of hemoglobin in any of the areas rises, then the area is currently working more actively. The children were offered various sets to play under the conditional names "Family", "Animals" and "Dream House".

Using this technique, it was possible to establish that playing with dolls - both in boys and girls to the same extent - activates exactly the area of the brain that is responsible for the perception and processing of social information, empathy and, consequently, emotional intelligence.
