When was the Great Sphinx built?

One of the greatest wonders of the world that has come down to us from ancient civilizations is the Great Sphinx in the city of Giza, in Egypt. The Sphinx is a mythical animal with a human head and the body of a lion. The Sphinx was an object of worship in the Egyptian religion, many sphinxes were created, but the most famous and ancient is the Great Sphinx. This sphinx was built in the XNUMXth century BC. e. The face of the sphinx had the features of the pharaoh Kafra, who ruled at that time, so that people could worship him in the guise of a sphinx. It was carved from a large block of stone in the center of a large quarry.

The body and head are carved from a monolithic block, and elongated paws are added with brickwork. The figure was originally covered with colored enamel. Only traces remained of her. Although we can still look at the Sphinx and enjoy it, it is now very different than before, because it has suffered from destruction. Sand deposits led to great erosion, cracks appeared throughout the figure.

The Sphinx was also destroyed by people. So, in 1380, the Egyptian ruler caused great damage to the Sphinx. And at one time the monument was used as a target for shooting from guns. The Great Sphinx reaches 20 meters in height and 73 meters in length. Nose 170 cm, mouth 231 cm long, face 417 cm wide.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Who is genetically closer to a man than a woman?

Humans are genetically closest to chimpanzees: depending on the method of counting, the similarity of our genomes ranges from 94% to 98%. The fact that chimpanzees have one pair of chromosomes more is explained by the fact that in human ancestors, two chromosomes merged into one during evolution, which is very similar in structure to the two unfused chimpanzee chromosomes. In this regard, it can be argued that, due to the difference in sex chromosomes, there are more genetic differences between a man and a woman than between a man and a male chimpanzee.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

electric sail 15.10.2008

Finnish engineer Pekka Janhunen proposes a new propulsion system for spacecraft that uses the so-called solar wind - a stream of charged particles flowing from the solar corona at a speed of 300-1200 kilometers per second.

If this stream can blow the tails of comets away from the Sun, can it be used to accelerate spacecraft? The spacecraft opens an "umbrella" of 50-100 thin wires, each 20-30 kilometers long.

The wires are positively charged (energy is taken from solar panels) and repel solar wind protons, creating thrust. By turning the wire "umbrella" and changing its charge, it will be possible to maneuver in space, as sailing yachts maneuver under the wind.
