Who are the Muses?

According to ancient mythology, the Muses are the patrons of the arts, the granddaughters of Uranus (heaven) and Gaia (Earth).

Each of the 9 muses "knew" a certain type of art: Calliope - epic and philosophy, Clio - history, Melpomene - tragedy, Polyhymnia - solemn song, Thalia - comedy, Terpsichore - dance, Urania - astronomy, Euterpe - lyric poetry, Erato - love confessions.

It is noticeable that in those distant times the concept of art was somewhat different from the modern one.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What question did the Sphinx ask the passing Thebans, and who taught her this question?

In Greek mythology, the Sphinx is a winged monster with a female head and a lion's body, the offspring of Typhon and Echidna.

Hera sent the Sphinx to Thebes to punish the city for seducing young Chrysippus by King Laius. Having settled on a mountain near the city (and according to some - in the city square), the Sphinx asked each Theban passing by a riddle: "Which of the living creatures walks on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening?" The Sphinx was taught this riddle of the Muse.

Those who failed to give the correct answer, the Sphinx killed and immediately devoured. So she killed many noble Thebans, including one of the sons of Creon, the ruler of Thebes. To rid the city of the monstrous Sphinx, Creon offered the hand of his sister Jocasta and the Theban throne to anyone who could solve the riddle of the monster and thereby destroy it.

Oedipus successfully coped with this task: when he gave the answer "man", the Sphinx in despair rushed into the abyss and crashed. Oedipus married Jocasta, not knowing that she was his mother.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
