What bacteria managed to survive in the sterile rooms where spacecraft are assembled?

The bacterium Tersicoccus phoenicis was discovered in 2013 in the rooms where you least expect to find it - the sterile rooms of NASA and the European Space Agency. Moreover, they are not connected with each other in any way: one is located in Florida, where the Phoenix spacecraft was assembled, and the other at the Kourou cosmodrome in South America. In such rooms, excess air pressure is maintained, they are cleaned with the strongest chemicals and ultraviolet light, but these conditions are quite suitable for bacteria. They may have already made it to Mars on the Phoenix or some other spacecraft.

How are raisins made from grapes?

Raisins are small, very sweet grapes carefully dried in the sun. There are not many areas on earth where grapes are grown and raisins are produced. Because after the ripening of the grapes, a period of several weeks of hot weather without rain is necessary in order to be able to dry it. Such areas are part of the Mediterranean in Spain and Greece, the peninsula of Asia Minor, part of South Australia, where the necessary climate exists.

San Joaquin and the Sacramento Mountain Valley are ideal areas for producing raisins and supplying them to the world market. The dry season is from August to November. There is no rain, the weather is hot, and the nearby mountains are a source of water for irrigation for the entire period of grape ripening.

In California, grapes ripen in August. It is harvested from the branches and placed on trays between rows for 23 weeks. Then it is put into boxes and dried a little more. After that, the grapes are sent to packaging plants. Here the grapes enter the conveyor to go through all the processes that prepare them for delivery to the market. Special machines remove twigs and debris. Then the grapes are washed, dried and treated with special solutions, the external moisture evaporates again, and the product is packaged in bags.

In the manufacture of raisins, about 3/4 of the original weight of the grapes is lost. Seedless raisins are obtained from the kishmish grape variety. This grape is native to California.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>
