What Olympic champion did not know that she was participating in the Olympics?

American Margaret Abbott won the women's golf event at the 1900 Olympics, becoming the first U.S. Olympic champion. However, due to the poor organization of that Olympics in Paris, Abbott did not know that she was taking part in it, like many other golfers. Even going home, Abbott was sure that she had won the tournament dedicated to the World Exhibition held in Paris in the same year.

Why did King Mithridates want to but could not commit suicide?

King Mithridates V of Pontus was poisoned by unknown people at a feast. His son Mithridates VI, who sat on the throne, from his youth began to take various poisons in small doses in order to develop immunity. Being at an advanced age and under the threat of captivity by the insurgent people, he himself wanted to commit suicide, but the poison, as one might expect, did not work. Mithridates had to ask for the favor of his guard, who killed him with a sword.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Spiders eat more meat than humans 22.03.2017

Scientists have long assumed that spiders are among the most active predators on the planet, and recently they were able to prove it. It turned out that the global population of spiders consumes up to 800 million tons of prey per year.

The order of spiders (Araneae) has more than 45 thousand species, while the average population density can be 131-152 individuals per square meter. Under the most favorable conditions, there are 1000 individuals per square meter.

All spiders are predators, feeding mainly on insects. Scientists have long been interested in the scale of the “catch”: back in the middle of the 2,2th century, naturalist William Bristowe calculated that 1012x2,2 spiders live in England and Wales, which can kill 1014xXNUMX insects annually. A number of colleagues disagreed with him, so for more accurate conclusions, it was necessary to change the data collection methodology.

The new study was conducted by specialists from the universities of Basel (Switzerland) and Lund (Sweden). The permanent biomass of the global populations of spiders and insects has been calculated based on data from open sources. Based on the estimated daily rate of food consumption by spiders and taking into account the dynamics of the reproduction of insect populations in certain territories, scientists were able to draw a big picture.

25 million tons of permanent biomass of spiders annually destroys from 400 to 800 million tons of insects. Such a significant difference in consumption is explained by weather conditions: on rainy days, insects hide, and spiders are less likely to catch prey.

Commenting on the data obtained, experts offer a comparison that allows us to assess the scale of spider predation. So, all seabirds annually consume about 70 million tons of food, for cetaceans this figure is at the level of 280-500 million tons of food, and even all people on the planet are content with 400 million tons of meat and fish per year.

What's more, the new study only looked at the volume of insect consumption by spiders, but these animals often prey on reptiles, birds, small mammals, and their own kind. Thus, although they are not at the top of the food chain, they are among the most active predators on Earth.
