Mathematical abilities are genetically transmitted

Scientists from the University of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, USA) found that mathematical abilities are transmitted genetically.

50 different families were studied. Children and parents had to solve mathematical problems.

At first, the test was solved by adults, they answered rather simple arithmetic questions for their age. Then the second group, representing the children-respondents, solved problems from specialists. Note that only schoolchildren enrolled in the first grades were allowed to participate in the experiment. Scientists already knew the approximate results of the study.

It was found that children of parents who had high test scores performed 50 percent better on a math test than other students. The experts summed up the conclusion of their work. According to experts, the propensity for mathematics is transmitted at the genetic level.

robot shrimp 28.03.2022

Researchers at Brown University and the National Autonomous University of Mexico have created a floating robot called RoboKrill. Its appearance was borrowed from a shrimp called krill (Euphausia superba). For smooth movement in the underwater depths, the microrobot is able to imitate the kinematics of live krill.

"Before this project, I did various researches aimed at understanding the role of plankton aggregation in the ocean. To this end, I conducted an experiment where I controlled the behavior of organisms using light signals. After that, I thought that it would be a good idea instead of externally controlling behavior of organisms, use a robotic system that has the same dynamic signature as floating living things," Monica M. Wilhelmus, one of the researchers who led the study, told TechXplore.

In the future, RoboKrill may be used by biologists and environmental scientists to remotely study the marine environment and collect scientific data at inaccessible depths. At the same time, the team does not plan to dwell on the possibility of additional modification of their robot, as well as assessing its performance in natural conditions.

“Now we will study the influence of semi-kinematic morphological features and dynamic interactions in thrust generation and optimize the important parameters to develop a simplified system that we can then scale down. Our ultimate goal is to design a small system and use it, for example, to intervene in various compact environments," Monika Wilhelmus shared her plans.
