What animal told runners to start from a low start?

Until 1887, all runners stood at the start at full height, waiting for the command to start running. The low start was invented by American sprinter Sherrill after observing kangaroos that bend down to the ground before starting to move. When he, despite the protest of the judge and the ridicule of the audience, applied a new method, he immediately won the race.

Why did medieval ladies wear marten and ermine furs?

Medieval ladies of European high society wore fur-trimmed clothes or entire stuffed stoats, sables, and martens over their dresses to bait fleas. Another way to deal with these insects were special boxes with slots - flea traps. A piece of cloth soaked in resin, blood or honey was placed in a twisting box, and the fleas crawling inside stuck to such a bait.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Driving school for rats 29.10.2019

In the laboratory of the University of Richmond, biologists staged a rat race. For several months, the animals were taught to drive a vehicle to test how complex the rat brain is.

Before the experiment, the rodents were divided into two groups. Some grew up in a variety of environments with educational toys. Others were placed in an ordinary laboratory cage. Four months later, the rats were introduced to homemade cars. The cabin for little drivers was built from a plastic container. To start the motor, it was enough to stand on the floor and grab the copper wire. By pressing on certain parts of the wire, the driver could choose the direction of travel: right, left or straight ahead.

Rodents rode in a special arena, measuring 120 by 60 centimeters. As a reward for good driving, the rats received sweet corn rings. But over time, the task became more difficult, and in order to earn a treat, the animals had to travel an increasing distance.

The best drivers turned out to be rats from the first group - those who had previously led a more active lifestyle. According to researchers, upbringing in a diverse environment has a positive effect on animals. They grow up interested in learning and cope with it more easily.

Before and after testing, the animals were tested for hormone levels. It turned out that after the driving school the mental state of the rats improved, they felt more relaxed and calm. This was due to high levels of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone, which counteracts stress. Moreover, in rats that were "driving", the content of dehydroepiandrosterone was higher than in ordinary passengers.

Perhaps the results will help psychologists create new effective methods of dealing with stress, in which stress will be expelled with the help of some specially designed complex activities, coupled with hormone therapy.
